Tom Hanks is the captain of a U.S. destroyer escorting a convey of merchant ships across the Atlantic during WWII. The convoy reaches "the pit" where they no longer have air cover and that's where the German u-boats hunt.
This is based on the novel The Good Shepard, which was inspired by the Battle of the Atlantic. So no, the movie itself is not based on a real mission or people. It's more an amalgam of various stories from the Battle of the Atlantic. Here's a "fact check" on the movie.
I liked the Cleveland character. It was a good way to work in diversity, showcase how everyone on a ship was part of the fighting, and display how personal the stakes were for the captain.
It's a really good film. If you enjoy it, make sure you see Das Boot.
