So i've been checking out this game called DayZ. Its only in Alpha but it looks like a blast. I dont really know how to explain it other than its a total open world MMO that is all about surviving, thats it! You die, your done!
I could see us getting a group together and roaming this massive open world and killing people or doing anything possible just to survive. Its a game with true consequences, and i love that.
Its kinda pricey at $30 for an Alpha game but it has sold over a million copies so far and this game has so serious potential. I might just be getting this game today.
Just do yourself a favor and check out the Steam page and the other link of some youtube videos, this game is crazy

This and Rust have both caught my eye as far as definite multi-worthy games.
The Arma 2 mod with the same name was so popular it spawned a whole genre of new games. Pretty cool.

some of the stories i've read from others about the game:
"Some guy made me eat a rotten bannana and I died"
"I starved to death because I couldn't open my can of beans"
"Walked into a room on a night sever, in which 2 guys with no pants proceeded to beat me over the head with shovels, Chanting tribe chants."
"I got chased by a guy in his underwear for miles. he was screaming ask me about my wiener."
"Cuffed a guy with handcuffs, force fed him disinfectant spray and a rotten kiwi. He vomited, and fell unconsious."
and last but not least:
"This game offers a very realistic depiction of Detroit."

Interesting.
I thought Day Z was this game, and was avoiding it like the plague.
As it turns out, that game became something else.
I'm willing to give it a look, but I don't know that I'm going to buy an alpha for full price. I would if everyone else did, and we all knew we were going to band together in game. I mean, if we got me, Cake, Gordo, Stranger, Troy, Malcolm, pulled Rifle away from LoL, Scooty, and even Catt and TPR, we'd have quite a force.
Hell, it could almost be as close to the early days of UO that we're going to get. That though alone has me interested.

Except that our group would constitute 25% of the server's population with servers holding up to 40 people.
That was the biggest turn off for me.
That along with the fact that if someone took my beans it would be just like rape in real life.

Servers only hold 40 people?
That's a big turn off. A small group of folks could dominate a server and kill the game for everyone else.

i would imagine that number would change as its only in Alpha, but who knows.

More reason to give it some time to develop.
If they can get that number up considerably, this game could be awesome.

I'm downloaded and ready to try this one if we can get a group. Sounds like my kind of game.

so you got it?! im really thinking i will be getting this game also. I've watched quite a few streams on twitch.tv at work today and it looks fun, sure there are some bugs but that will all eventually get hammered out.
A few things of note:
- the zombie population is very low right now as the devs are trying to get the AI to work better.. Eventually they want a much larger zombie population to promote more teamwork amongst people and not the "kill on sight" gameplay that is currently being played.
-Ive heard that the 40 man server population is pretty good right now, it gives people room to explore areas without just running into someone that will kill you the second you are spotted.
-most common bugs, walking thru and getting shot thru walls. falling off a ladder only a few feet off the ground and dying. Inventory items come up missing, sometimes everything!
Still looks like it might be worth the investment, i'll prolly purchase this game tonight since i know at least one other person has already got it. And i know Leisher has the deep Steam pocket fund from christmas, so he will get it.

Don't be so sure. I'm having a hard time with that 40 person limit.
I'm not even 50/50 that I'll get it.

you gotta understand that in a game like this you don't wanna be running into people around every corner you turn. It would just turn into a game like COD and it would be hard to equip your guy. You gotta feed yourself, you gotta arm yourself, and the suspense of actually running into someone is real.
Sure there could be a group of 10-15 people running together and ruling the server, but the map is so massive that you may never even run into them. I've watched streams and really you might see 4-5 people walking together at most. it actually promotes the suspence in the game.

of all the complaints that i read about in the forums about the game, the server size isn't even an issue.

If 40 people max is a good size to allow for all the stuff you said, it also implies a very small world. For a free for all concept, 40 people is probably a good number. But when we are talking about getting up to 10 people on a server, it will be the server no one plays on because of that big group of 10 people on it.
Also, there's another game that's early access that you super hyped and MULTIPLE people bought (not just one) that you still haven't bought!
This seems like a game you hop into, play for a while until you die, then are done for the night and play again the next night. I would want more persistence.
Bigger map so more people can be on it, thus supporting larger communites.
Actual persistence where there are long term affects from your actions.
Those are the things I'll be waiting for.

Oh, and speaking of Dayz, get the original for $6. It's in the current Humble Bundle and includes a bunch of other games. Including ARMA 2 of course.

I only "hyped" PA because we were talking about playing an RTS game and one hadn't been chosen yet. My past experiences with RTS games were "they're all the same" and I thought that one looked like the new kid on the block and the others looked dated. We ended up going for SC2 and all is well. No sense in me buying it after the sale was over with when it didn't look like we were gonna be playing it. I didn't know having an opinion on a game when we were discussing what to play committed me to buying it.

From what I understand, you just described Rust. I haven't played it myself. It's on Steam doing the early alpha access thing.

Here's the thing about server size. There are a ton of servers with the same map. Not sure how big, but big enough.
But your permadeath character and his equipment, guns, food and whatever else can be switched to any of the servers.
And you will want to switch. Loot in buildings respawns daily and then is done until the next day, so items that are already scarce are tough to find on crowded servers. So we would probably band together and get started on a quiet friendlier server, and then could pick a crowded one for pvp. Outlaws show up different, I think - so PKs can't hide.
The servers are all running anti cheating software you have to jump through hoops for.
I like Rust premise too. I thought it was earlier along than DayZ but might be wrong

So you are hopping from server to server trying to score loot?
