Microsoft should have learned from XBox and XBox 360 that 300-400 is the sweet spot.

Eh, alright. Maybe a second place finish when you were expecting a strikeout. Sold about 2M fewer units than the XBox, but the Gamecube cost 2/3 as much. PS2 destroyed them both. I remember playing the fuck out of Super Smash Bros Melee.

Pretty sure they were selling XBoxes for a loss. Yep.
Per-unit losses on the original Xbox were estimated at $125, and about the same amount for the Xbox 360 at launch.
Found some places saying the GC sold at a "small loss." I think it's safe to say that it was less than $125, or near 50% of it's selling price.

Total Nintendo GameCube games sold as of September 30, 2013: 208.57 million.

Total Xbox Games Sold: 104,000,000
Nintendo took a smaller loss on about 90% of the volume for the hardware. They pushed out twice as many game (software) units.

Xbox was something new, GameCube was building on Nintendo's legacy and history. Given the success with 360 that the XBox setup, Xbox > GameCube.
