When I spent 2 weeks in Japan in 1999.... I spent time all over Tokyo, Yokahama, and Kyoto.... I never saw a Japanese flag flying anywhere. I was told by a translator they were still ashamed of their war mongering and military adventurism in the 1940s.

In America there are American flags in front of every fast food joint, every hotel, every post office. In Japan in 1999..... nothing.

The other day I was in a waiting room, and the TV was showing some ice skating competition in.... Finland, or something. The Japanese skater starts, and suddenly the crowd were holding scores, hundreds, possibly, of Japanese flags.

Is their non-nationalistic mood changing, or was that just a one-time thing?

I don't think they ever went non-nationalist. I don't know if that's possible.

Ah, that's right. They're also looking to overturn this, and as time between now and WWII gets larger and larger, they gain more and more support.

In its text, the state formally renounces the sovereign right of belligerency and aims at an international peace based on justice and order. The article also states that, to accomplish these aims, armed forces with war potential will not be maintained.

That part also sticks in their craw, especially given that China just rolled out a modern aircraft carrier.
