I actually just submitted a complaint to the FCC, my very first. Hello from Oldsville.

I am getting really tired of those anti-smoking commercials where people mutilate themselves. I always have to look away. It's fucking gross.

All "the truth" ads are fucking retarded.

Their latest one is hilariously misleading, and honestly, dangerous for race relations. It's some black girl talking about how the cigarette companies are intentionally targeting black people, and how internal memos called them a "high priority demographic".

The implication is that there's some sort of secret plan to target (eliminate?) black people via smoking.

The reality is that it's called marketing. When Disney ran their ad campaign a few years back that featured black people in every commercial almost exclusively, nobody screamed about that. Why'd they do it? Because the number of black families that went to their parks was much lower than other demographics.

So yeah, cigarette companies want everyone to smoke, and if your demographic isn't smoking as much as others, they'll go after you.

Oh, they also point out how much more advertising there is in black neighborhoods than other folks. Since most black Americans live in urban areas, and that's where the most gas stations and convenience stores are located, and that's where all the cigarette advertising is...

I actually got a response, it comes down to this:

The FCC is not permitted to censor or restrict the availability of non-broadcast programming shown over cable and satellite systems. Cable and Satellite Operators do not have the same restrictions on program content as regular television broadcast stations.

There was about 5 pages more of information explaining why.

So I don't even know who to bitch to, at that point... maybe the individual channels showing these commercials?

Peeps go into a convenience store to buy cigs. They offer money, the clerk says, "It costs more than that." Then people peel skin off their face, or start pulling teeth, and the narrator says how smoking destroys your skin or teeth. It's graphic and gross.

They are prolly on youtube. My 1988 brain still doesn't just think of that first.

How does anyone watch sports and not see these ads? Or Tosh? Or Adult Swim? Or most things on Hulu?

Cigarette companies market their products! Shame! This is the one that's been pissing me off because it's screaming racism.

I only watch sports, as far as live TV Goes, and have never seen those ads.
