Have you ever noticed how much of human nature is motivated by it? I'd say 98% of all people move around day to day in a constant state of fear.

I'm bored and disgusted more than I'm scared.

Sit out in the woods quietly for a few hours and watch the wildlife. Almost everything they do is based on survival and a good chunk of that is caution and they are ready to bolt. It's in us on a cellular level.

They don't have sentience and self-consciousness to fuck with their behaviour.

Do you think people are running around with complete control over their most base instincts? Or even partial control?

Yes. Otherwise, we'd be killing, fucking, and fighting way more. People are more wrapped up in their own lives and brains than they're afraid of the external world. I'd say for the most part. You can obviously set up circumstances to break those protective buffers down (like the Stanford prison experiment) but I believe most people have developed mental neuroses, complexes, or illnesses to keep the fear away or mitigate it lest it paralyze them into a nihlistic, catatonic state.
