A young cop that was just promoted to detective joins a card game run by veteran detectives. He has to use the knowledge he gains to stop a serial killer.

That's a really non-spoiler description for this movie.

This is an odd, yet very good movie. It's not perfect. The people involved have to act like morons from time to time to keep things going, and the whole theme of the old timers' stories guiding the young cop doesn't quite work the way they think it does.

Those old timers being a draw as you've seen all their faces before. The most notable is Ron Perlman.

The acting is solid, and the action is nice for a "seems very long" cerebral thriller. The killer is no Hannibal Lecter, but he has a style about him that's interesting. His motivation is also kind of awesome.

Did I mention the female lead yet? Holy shit she's hot.

I really enjoyed the movie despite its flaws. Recommended.
