Been trying to figure out what was bugging me about this film, and watching the first Thor last night flipped on the light.

Odin.

In the first movie, Anthony Hopkins was actually into the role, it seemed. For example, the scene after Thor and the gang raid into the Frost Giant city to raise hell, Odin scoops them back, and is going off on Thor about how he is a big spoiled baby. Loki tries to defend his brother (sincere? no? who knows), and Odin half turns to him and just scream/growls incoherently and the intent was clearly SHUT THE FUCK UP LOKI.

I don't remember any scenes like that in Thor 2, with Hopkins going balls deep into his character. I will have to rewatch to lock down that opinion.... but Hopkins was playing a much more subdued Odin in 2. It took a lot out of the movie.

Also.... I didn't realize it til the end but the bad guy was played by Chris Eccleston, the 9th Doctor. Such a good actor and he was buried under so much makeup and prosthetics that the character might as well have been a hand puppet as far as the depth of his acting. So much makeup and shit that I didn't even recognize him as the 9th Doctor, is the point.

Hmmm.

I heard it was going to be like 20 minutes, too. Quarter of a movie.

It was meh.

I didn't care for the story very much. It reeked of "it's magic, so just go with it, and ignore all the lapses in logic".

Tom Middleson was still awesome as Loki. Rene Russo really stepped it up here too. Natalie Portman was super hot. Her intern was the comic relief. What they did with the older guy was just stupid. Thor is Thor.

Nice to see Heimdal (or whatever) and Chuck get some more screen time.

For future films, pay attention to the countdown of what they're "collecting". I expect all 6 or 5 to be ready to go for Avengers 3.

Still a decent film, just not amazing. Kind of like Thor, the character not the movie. He's a demigod, and is cool, but works better within a team than on his own. Asgardian story lines typically suck.

Was that your first viewing of the movie?

I stand by what I said about Anthony Hopkins. I felt like the passion he had in the first flick was gone.

The One-Shot was interesting. Nice twist. Obviously setting up something in the future... and it was funny to see you-know-who again, at the end. I realized that these were essentially short stories to round out the full-books that are the movies. Neat. By the end I am going to have to have a separate "Marvel Universe" section on my wall of blu rays.

Agreed.

And mostly agree on your details. Didn't think Natalie was that hot this time around. Just meh.

Too predictable. Too "magic" Too... who the fuck cares?

Seems like, in the big picture, the entire movie was just a reason to get the thing in the hands of the Collector. Captain America: The Winter Soldier turned most of the other sequels into, "Hey look at what wacky thing happened to Thor/Tony Stark, today, and oh yeah here's 120 seconds to move the big plot along."
