So this is a new series on FX with Slingblade and Bilbo Baggins.

The commercials were interesting enough that I actually set the DVR for a TV show that was brand new and I hadn't yet heard good word of mouth. It was a good call.

Usually I dislike straight-dramas. Life is a drama and when I watch TV it is time for fantasy life. But the actors in this show were so good that I blinked and the 90 minute first episode was over.

Worth your time.

There was a scene in last night's episode that pretty much makes this a direct sequel to the movie.

In case you wondered about the connection.

This goddam show.

Billy Bob Thornton may or may not be the literal devil.

Season just ended. Seems to be a completely closed loop, so it was more a miniseries than a season of TV.

Stayed solid from beginning to end. Must-see-TV.

Waiting for approval for 2nd season, should be a slam dunk.

Just watched the first episode. Whoa.

I was expecting dark comedy. It's just dark.

I was wondering... and there's the connection.

I was just about to comment about the show slowing down... and...

I somehow made it all the way through episode 8 before giving up and deleting the rest. It had some interesting moments but it was way too full of boring.

Weren't there only 10 episodes?

Episode 1 - Exciting, interesting, dark.
Episodes 2-4 - Kinda interesting, pretty dark, but now with humour.
Episodes 5-6 - Starting to fall asleep, and.. HELLO
Episode 7 - Back to sleep.

Why are all the kids retarded?
Interesting direction and camera work.

I feel like several things were simplified, or assumed to work that in reality would have been more complex. There's a slight magical realism feel to it.

The # of bit characters you've seen here and there is entertaining (Key and Peele, Bob Odenkirk, Adam Goldberg, Glenn Howerton, Oliver Platt, Kate Walsh, etc)

Yes, I basically walked out at the 80% mark.

As I said, I'm surprised I got that far.

It was better before it started getting all relationshipy. Just like Breaking Bad was too.

Focus on the action, people.

That... was not satisfying. It was good... I was mostly entertained... but it got slow. They didn't have enough for 10 episodes. People made stupid decisions. But I guess without stupid decisions, there's not a lot of drama in life.

At least they didn't go for the cheap kills.

People on IMDB are insane giving this a 9.1/10 though.

Spoilers.

It was tense.... Lester became a dipshit monster going up to Malvo in Vegas to show him how he became a bigboy too, and it cost him. And he sends his wife in to the safe as a decoy.... what a dick. And you don't want mailman to die (I am forgetting names) when he confronts Malvo...

And where in the fuck did all the fish on the road come from? The news in the background blames atmospheric phenomenon, but we saw more than once that all local bodies of water were covered in a thick layer of ice. Since "events in this story are true" or whatever, I want to see a link to the newspaper article from when it happened.

The true story part comes from the original movie, which the Coen brothers explained:
Although the film plot is completely fictional, the Coen brothers claim that many of the events that take place in the movie were actually based on true events from other cases that they threw together to make one story. Joel Coen noted:

"We weren't interested in that kind of fidelity. The basic events are the same as in the real case, but the characterizations are fully imagined ... If an audience believes that something's based on a real event, it gives you permission to do things they might otherwise not accept."[4]

The Coens claim the actual murders took place, but not in Minnesota.[5] The main reason for the film's setting is the Coens were born and raised in St. Louis Park, a suburb of Minneapolis.[6]

The tv show just kept it to tie into the Movie. Like the name. And the briefcase of money. And nothing else, as far as I can tell.

Yeah, I didn't want the two good people to die, but I wanted Malvo to die... better. Yes, Lester became a giant dick, especially the part about sending in his 2nd wife to die, but you knew that was coming.

Right, they mention a tornado (water spout) or what not picking up the fish. A story I've heard before like this. But yes, it was all frozen over as we saw before. I guess it's possible that the entire lake was not frozen.

Whatever happened to the grocery store magnate? Last I remember, his son died. What happened to the money? Someone else pick it up? What was Malvo's plan there? Doesn't seem like he cares about money. They never really solved the naked man case. Why was Malvo speeding? He was generally so prepared and thorough, why speed? Why have a deaf/mute hitman?

I THINK that was his voice we heard on one of Malvo's tapes, where he was cursing Malvo and then committed suicide. I could be wrong.
