My kid scored the highest in his class, today, on a "What is your vocabulary?" test, no big deal. Apparently he blew the rest of them away.

I wouldn't have done that little humblebrag but I wanted to see if Malcolm would comment on how... like... language is dead and a waste of time, or something.

After years of seeing private schools from inside and out, I'm privvy to their bullshit. Breadth of vocabulary isn't a bad thing, but I find myself simply inventing words I need if I can't recall them exactly -- seems to work ok. Stupid shit like learning spelling (without wheeling in etymology) is a waste of time.

One of my kid's classmate invited him and his parents, and 5 other kids, to what I am told is the most expensive club in the city for a Harry Potter-themed banquet. Not only am I afraid we're going to have to buy new HP clothes, I'm not sure if they'll let our Ford in the parking lot.

When my wife's coworkers at the bank found out we'd been invited to this club, even the bigwigs were impressed. Ugh.

I'm not sure if they'll let our Ford in the parking lot.

To be fair, no one should let a Ford in a parking lot, or even out of a factory.

They spend a week in math class teaching some simple concept that my kid understands in 5 minutes for the kids who need a week and still don't get it.

That's because our society is all about the worst of us where we used to be focused on the best of us. Remember "remedial" classes in schools? They don't have those anymore. Can't make those kids feel less special or their feelings might get hurt!

I just don't understand that attitude. It's a club that just takes money, the end. There's nothing special about any of them.
