It appears people with the balls to carry it are getting it, if I'm interpreting Seth's words properly.

To me this still smells like it was all marketing.

Let's see how much money they make on this thing within the next few months. I bet it will be far more than most movies of it's type.

Sony has done such a fantastic job on this con that even the FBI are duped or in on it?

Who is more likely to be able to fool the FBI? First-world hackers secretly hired by Sony marketing or a bunch of third-world peasant hackers from a starving backwards nation that can't even light up the sky at night? I won't go so far as to assert that this is true, though. Just slightly plausible. It's pretty risky, or would be if corporations had to worry about jail time if caught.

It's much more likely that after this started due to external hackers, Sony latched onto the opportunity to use it to build hype and eventually sell more tickets and/or DVDs. I don't think for a second they ever intended not to release the movie and make as much money on it as they can.

I read somewhere that former cyber security guys from Sony are suing them. Pretty sure that's a pre-emptive suit because they know Sony is coming after them. When Gordo and I worked together, that company had piss poor security and I kept pointing out issues and kept getting over ruled on fixing them. So I don't blame the security guys, because you know a lawsuit is coming otherwise.

I'm not expecting a ton of people to see this film. There will be a number of people who will, to "Fuck North Korea!" or whatnot, but the reviews I've read have been terrible. And that number of people will not be large.

Not North Korea.
Last Friday the FBI formally accused Pyongyang of taking a central role in the attack based on the virus’ coding and the use of a global network of computers, both of which were employed in attacks against South Korea in the last two years.

All the cash those asshats get every year, and it looks like they can't even distinguish foreign hackers from company insiders. How many intelligence fuck ups does it take before someone in those organizations admits they're fucking up royally?

Yay Netflix!

I went into this thinking it was going to suck and was pleasantly surprised.

It's not a comedy classic by any means, but it is entertaining.

Rogan produces Franco's vapid talk show that focuses on celebrities. Due to some ill words at a party, Rogan wants more serious stuff and that leads them to figuring out how they can interview Kim Jong Un. The CIA asks them to eliminate him while they're there, and there's a brief Spies Like Us deja vu, but it ends much, much faster than the previews implied. Everything gets a bit silly late in the film. More so than the beginning, which believe it or not, has some plausibility. It can be forgiven though as this is a comedy.

Rogan and Franco remind me of Abbott and Costello here with Rogan playing the straight man and Franco being the dimwit. That's a good fit for them due to their chemistry.

The guy playing Kim is pretty awesome as well.

Two quick notes of interest:
-I know we've bashed Eminem on this board before, but I respect him doing the scene he did here. Say what you want about him, but this took a lot of balls and an ability to laugh at himself.
-Remember when you watched Rambo IV and were immediately caught off guard by how gory it was compared to previous Rambo and action movies films? Well, the special effects guy from that might have worked on this film.

It's worth seeing once, especially considering how it's been "in the news".

A surprisingly enjoyable flick. Everything Leisher says above is 100% true.

I have no doubt that far more people will see it than would have if it weren't for the hack and cancellation.

Yeah, I was surprised by this one. Sometimes the stoner stuff gets on my nerves.... not a Pineapple Express fan.... but this didn't really have any of that.

Good stuff.

So... one of the criticisms levied again Kim Jong Un is that the government can't "feed their people."

Why can't these people feed themselves? How did they not all starve before the advent of government/state control of everything? What are they doing that they aren't... like... farming?

From here:
Why are the North Koreans always going hungry?

Poor growing conditions, fertilizer shortages, and general mismanagement. On the most basic level, the terrain and climate in North Korea aren’t great for farming. The country is mountainous, and the growing seasons are short. (North Korea is at approximately the same latitude as New England, but prevailing air currents make it even colder.) In defiance of nature, North Korea’s isolationist leaders decided in the 1950s that domestic farmers had to fulfill all the country’s food needs. They instituted intensive agricultural practices to maximize yield from their limited arable land, relying on heavy irrigation and copious pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers. They scraped by for decades with only occasional famines, but the system totally collapsed in the 1980s, when the Soviet Union cut the supply of subsidized fossil fuels, from which many of the DPRK’s agricultural chemicals are derived.

If true, I would guess it's mainly that before government/state control they just had a lot less people to feed. In 1940 there were 8.5 million people to feed. Now there are over 24 million. But without external resources they're stuck with having to do their farming in ways similar to how it was back when they only had 8.5 million instead of the more modern methods that let them increase population in between.

Try growing food without all the handy benefits of modern technology. Also, even if your farm makes enough for your family to get by, I'd bet it gets confiscated by any local official that remembers he accidentally left his harvest in your cellar.
