NO problem with getting rid of the hacker filled old version.
I am a little concerned about a new tool they put in: Spectator Mode.
First thing that popped into my head was "Admin Abuse".

They're working on buildings and trying to make them a priority as that steps to be the last step before they can legit say the new version is at the same place as the legacy version. (Give or take things here and there.)
The most interesting note last week was that they're adding a moss system so it's easier to navigate. That's pretty cool.

The new building system looks awesome. Check out the Rust page if you haven't been there lately.

They've added keys to the doors. Keys that can be looted... However, upgrades to password and what not are coming, but as he points out, "at a cost".
Not sure I like that. If everyone starts equal, no problem, but join a server late and you're far more prone to get killed by better equipped people and have your house looted.

Rust resembles old school UO more than anything else. If they put in a safe zone with banks and guards...

We’re working on moving over to Unity 5. We’re hoping to have done this by this time next week.
Before everyone gets excited, an engine upgrade doesn’t automatically make everything look and perform ten times better. So please don’t expect things to change, at all.
That said Unity 5 comes with things we desperately need. A 64bit edition means we don’t have to close and re-open the editor to avoid crashing with out of memory errors. The PhysX update in Unity5 means that we’re no longer limited to 65,000 collider objects – which means that servers won’t need to be wiped anywhere near as often. The PhysX update brings faster physics too – I’m hearing more than twice as fast from a lot of people.
There are other nice things. The physically-based shader means we don’t have to write our own custom shaders for a lot of things. SpeedTree support should mean that we have the best looking and performing trees in the game industry.
These things aren’t something you just switch on and Unity5 only entered beta 2 days ago, so don’t expect this stuff to happen over-night. But things should get a lot more interesting.

I don't think vaporware can be applied at all. I was going to say the legacy version could be called vaporware, but that's still being played and I think it's been over a year.
Meanwhile, they're coding the new version and updating their site weekly like clockwork, and even allow folks to follow their minute by minute updates on Twitter.
I think Rust has taken early access to a whole new level.

Most software I know doesn't have an alpha version that's robust enough to support anything interesting.
Diogenes of Sinope: "It is not that I am mad, it is only that my head is different from yours."
Arnold Judas Rimmer, BSC, SSC: "Better dead than smeg."
Considering the Rust we all played was nothing more than a concept demo, I'd say they're the exception to the rule.

The experimental server has made it so players now start only with a rock. The point being that you should be able to craft everything else from that item (after collecting resources).
Getting really close to replacing legacy...
They also went 64bit and are adding triangular foundations so buildings aren't all square.

If you’ve run Rust in the last few days you’ll have noticed that experimental is now the default option. Which means it isn’t experimental anymore. This is what Rust is. The old version, which is now known as Legacy is still available for you to enjoy if you’re not ready for the change yet.
I want to explain why we decided to make the switch. We know there’s still bugs, we know it’s not feature complete, we know we still have work to do.. but it had to happen. It gives us a kick up the arse. Now the bugs and the missing features are a million times more obvious and a million times more urgent to us. This is how we wanted to make the game from the start.. with lots of people playing it and giving constant feedback. We’re not saying it’s finished – we’re just saying we think it’s good enough to be our foundation.
