It's crazy how similar this game is to Titan Quest. SOOOO many of the same commands and features and options and stuff.

When Titan Quest came out the developers made no secret that they were looking to fill a void left after Diablo 2 and Torchlight is made by ex Diablo programmers so they are both drawing from the same source material.

My first charcter was the fighter and I set it to Hard. I died a couple times in the beginning, but at this point, I'm running through the dungeon levels sending my pet back with goods a couple times. It's not much of a challenge at all.

Started a new character, the mage, and set it to Hardest. I made it through the first three levels of the dungeon pretty easily. When what's his name was transformed, he tore me up. Bought a map to do some leveling, but it's kicking my ass. I've died at least 50 times and I've only done a couple of rooms on it.

HUGE jump between hard as a fighter and hardest as a mage. Wish I had done it the other way around. I'm hoping that my mage will catch up and be playable.

One thing I found cool was that my character that I created on my desktop was available on my laptop. First Steam game I've seen do that. Titan Quest does not.

That's neato.

I didn't even know you could do that (don't have a laptop that could, anyway)

I think Torchlight, TF2, and the L4Ds are the only ones that currently do that. They games are saved in the Steam Cloud, aka there servers.

As for difficulty there are huge jumps between all of them. I started out on easy just to see the town and such and then made the jump to normal and was OK after a bit but in the beginning was getting my ass kicked.

Also be aware that hardcore if you die your character is dead, no coming back to life. At least that is what I read since I haven't played hardcore yet.

Ya. Hardcore isn't more difficult. Just more risky. I'm not interested in that.

I've gotten over the hump on hardest. I didn't know the dungeon respawn Diablo style. So, it made leveling up easier. But really, I was done with that anyway. I was able to defeat the boss I was having trouble with and was able to move on pretty easily. I'm definately dying more often as the mage on hardest than I was the fighter on hard. But, that could just be the weakness of the mage. Many monster teleport on top of him then squish him. I am now level 13 and can move through the dungeon pretty quickly. I've aquired some hard hitting weapons and my level 2 fireball seems over powered as it's area affect clears many monsters at once. On the other hand, summoned helpers don't last very long at all.

Over all, I think hardest is definately the level to play at.

Troy, Torchlight has a "Netbook" mode. So, whatever laptop you have, I'm sure it will run it. Unless you are saying you don't have a laptop at all.

Today I beat Ordack or whatever his name is in normal mode. I couldn't go deeper into the "main" dungeon and a new dungeon opened up, the "shadow vault" (I think that's the name).

Is it worth diving into that or should I start over on a higher difficulty level?

Am I at the end of the game or is the Shadow Vault thing the next chapter?

You beat it.

The Shadow Vault is the endless dungeon though.

You can keep going in it and eventually things will get so tough they will 1-hit you and stuff.

Let's compare equipment here. I'm curious to see how the game distributes it based on your level, progress, difficulty, etc.

My mage is lvl 69 with lvl 50 fame, has beaten the game and made it to lvl 20 of the Shadow Vault. All on Normal difficulty.

His equipment-

Armor:
Epic Serpent Helm - 56 armor
Epic Serpent Chest - 110 armor
Lime Epic Heavy Plate Vambrace of Resistance - 49 armor
+17 Def ring
+21 Def necklace
+8 Magic & Dex ring
Epic Dragonscale Mantle - 98 armor
Epic Talon Sash - 60 armor
Epic Transmuter Sabotons - 47 armor

Weapons:
Epic Anachronistic Device (1-handed wand) - 587/sec
Epic Volbard's Prison (1-handed wand) - 789/sec

I'm nowhere near that level with my mage. Level 30ish. I have low armor values but high resistance numbers. There isn't much magic that actually does damage to me. Arrows and bashing hurt though.

My weapons are 340 and 290. My skill points went into making my magic hurt more and saved a bunch of points for level 25 so I could buy a lot of big stuff.

When/if I hit level 69, I'll revise my entry.

The level 25 skills. I wanted a lot of points so I could buy them. Golem, ember sentry, etc.

I never noticed level limits on the spells/abilities. Weird.

Yeah you need to reach certain levels to get both the higher levels of the beginning skills and just to be able to activate the the more powerful skills at all. Still not a high enough level to be able to start learning the last/best berserker skill.

Found myself with extra time this morning so I used one of the random dungeon scrolls.

Unbelievably tough. I gained three levels in a two floor dungeon.

What numbers was it? 10-20, 20-??, 15-30, etc. I was using the 10-20s for easy cash when I was low. I could run through them pretty quickly and after sending the pet home to sell a few times and collecting other loot, I'd come out with about 10-15k more than I went in with. But, the 10-20s were easy.

20-??

I'm level 86, so the game doesn't give me 10-20s anymore.

Torchlight is $5 again. But I think everyone owns it now.

There are a bunch of mods available for it too.

Mod info

Also, read that although the MMO version is going to be free to play, they are selling in game items (potions, mounts, etc) for real money. That's how they'll earn revenue.

Exactly what Evony does...
