I don't think he tanked it, but the scene with Thor in the magical hot tube was forced on him. Disney wanted it to tie in with Thanos (or whatever his name is) and all the stones. According to Joss, he was told if the hot tub scene isn't in there, the farm scenes aren't in there. So I don't think he cared at ALL about that scene and how to make it fit with what was going on.

Yeah, as much as I am a Whedon fan I have to say he's really only ever great doing TV shows. His movies have always been his lesser products. He really needs his characters to be in a much longer format.

I like Aaron Sorkin just as much, and he's got the same problem. His movies just aren't as good as his TV.
