Perhaps the destruction of the Kelvin led to changes in design philosophy? Someone that would have been doing something else somewhere else instead came back to earth and joined the design team.
Someone who also really really likes bright lights, apparently.

If there were 4 lights then the designer would have been a romulan spy.

Finally saw this. A mixed bag w\ a number of things I found retarded beyond words.
The dude they got to play Kirk was, shockingly, alright. Simon Pegg was ... well, Simon Pegg. Eric Bana was underdeveloped & underused, both otherwise over-the-top & fine. Sulu felt wasted except for one scene.
A number of characters got on my damned nerves, notably Spock & fucking Bones. They annoyed the living piss out of me. Whiny bitches, the both of them.
More than few moments of villainous stupidity, which made me have to consume more booze to numb myself.
If you're rating it relative to the glory days of Trek, it's mediocre. J.J. Abrams & his team of writers are still hacks, no matter how large the special effects budget is.
As far as brainless action flicks go, it's a watchable renter.
