Someone tried to pass off a video of Switzerland as Gastonia, NC a few years ago (outside Charlotte, NC). Someone fell for it.

There's an old, popular fantasy series that has a map of Florida (Xanth). Someone at the Onion plagiarized an idea.

A podcast I listen to, "Your Stupid Opinions", does nothing but read reviews of places and products posted on the internet. Literally, this morning the host says, "Now we're going to Meijer in Maumee, OH." He butchers the name of course.

I got to work when they started there, so I'll pick it up again tomorrow morning.

Way back in the day a squaw and her son were in a boat on the unnamed river. They got caught in a strong current and hit a rock which toppled the boat. The mom ended up on one side of the river and the son on the other. Legends say you could hear him for miles screaming, "MAW ME!!!"

Or some nonsense. I don't think that's the actual story, just an old joke, but I've heard it and variations many times.

I live in Ottawa County, on the shores of Lake Erie. The Maumee River flows nearby, and I live near Chippewa golf course. Kid goes to Miami University. And once we're talking southern Ohio, more tribal names everywhere.

But Perrysburg and Perry's Monument are also nearby, named after a badass white guy. So that's cool too.

(In the Netflix adaption of the Battle of Lake Erie, Perry will be black, FYI)
