Torchwood

As long as we recognize Lucas is washed up and most TV sucks, we'll all get along fine.

Most of the way through season 1.

It's just barely good enough to keep watching.... I keep waiting for The Doctor to show up... I am guessing the hand in the jar is his.

Just watched, "They Keep Killing Suzie."

And oh yeah... I figured since this show was a Dr Who spinnoff on the BBC, then it would be family safe. My son likes Dr Who, so I sat down to watch Torchwood with him.

In the second episode, some bird gets shagged in the loo of a discoteque, graphically, while a bloke is wacking off while watching it all take place on the CCTV system. Graphically.

So no, not child safe.

And how do you like all that brit slang???

I don't remember that or I'd have warned you.

Sorry.

I think you need to replace wacking with wanking.

Not completely sure though.

Finished season 1. I give the show a B-. Lots of stand-alone episodes, which is generally passe and boring these days.

IMO it hits it's highpoint in the last season, so if it's B- now it'll probably be at least B+ by then.

The last episode of the season was interesting. Capt Jack sure is forgiving to people who shoot him in the head with the intent to kill. Or people who leave a killer robot in the basement that goes on a killing spree.

Season 2.

Spike!

And he's just as gay as every other man in England!

Started season 3 "Children of Earth," and wow, this show really turned a corner. Much darker and grittier and less silly.

Season three must be where they start to become capable of pulling a trigger.

I see what you did there... but to be fair, they started being free with the firearms near the end of season 2.

Just watched part 2 of the 5 part season... I really want to watch all of them tonight, but I need to be up in the morning. This is a great arc. If they had done this sort of thing from the beginning it wouldn't have been canceled, or whatever this short season 3 is supposed to represent.

It's not officially been canceled, the short season is just the typical vagaries of British TV production. More Torchwood is on the way in 2011.

Told you it got better. :p

God damn, they went dark.

SPOILERS FROM HERE ON OUT

I can't believe the British nanny state allowed the BBC to portray their government in such a horrific light. It doesn't get any worst than what they did. And Capt Jack purposely killing his own grandson... jesus fucking christ.

I can't think of any way that last episode could have been any worse except if they'd actually given away the millions of kids. But the line had already been crossed. They chose what was politically viable over what was right, and they didn't even take that long to think about it. The scary part is, I could see the same situation playing out the same way in real life... people always suck.

Capt Jack is a monster, and he can never make up for what he did, in 1965 or now. It doesn't matter that he saved the rest of them in the end; he killed kids, and worse, sold them into a horrible eternal life. Everything after that is just numbers.

This show sucks now.

Was it just hard for me to watch because I'm a parent?

Possibly. At least I didn't take it that hard.

But then I don't like kids.

On the other hand, I do recall thinking the government's actions were abominable. So maybe I'm not completely hopeless.

Completely irredeemable.

Reminded me a bit of Stephen King's "Storm of the Century." A small town sells a young boy to a vampire in exchange for their own lives.

Don't you realize your life is done, anyway, if you do that? And if you can live with it, you were always a monster.

Makes me want to get a concealed carry permit so if I ever get into that situation, I can just shoot the bitch in the head as soon as she starts whipping people up into the fear frenzy.

And christ, the expendable middle man who went home and killed his family.... christ. dark. But possibly the best decision anyone made in the episode.... he should have leaked the truth first, though. Why didn't anyone do that. Give people a chance to choose to fight.

Not exactly. It's not like they were giving the 456 what they wanted in the process. They were using him as a weapon against them.

It's still very bad, absolutely, but it's not the same thing as rolling over and handing your kid to a monster.

Just out of curiosity, do you think it would have been better or worse or the same - morally speaking - to use some other random kid instead of his own grandson?

I didn't mean trading his grandson to the 456 was like that King story, I meant the world giving 10% to the 456 was like the King story. They sold their souls for safety. The fact that people would not choose to go down fighting makes me not want to live on this planet.

The best that can be said for Jack's actions is that sacrificing his grandson was his penance for his actions in the past as a monster. Doesn't change it much.

They could have at least tried to comfort the kid as he was begging to know what was going on. He may have found a small bit of comfort in his last moments.

I think it would have been cowardly to use another random kid, just as the PM's cabinet members made a decision to kill kids, but kept their own kids out of it.

Oh, absolutely, I agree with you 100%.

But now I'm confused. Was Jack involved in that part somehow? I remember him fighting against them. I thought you were saying the sacrifice of his grandson was completely unacceptable.
