So I've seen the trailer twice in the last couple days.
There's a scene where it looks like the US military is attacking the martians all-out. Civilians are running away, the military is running too.
Tom Cruise stops a young man trying to fight and throws him to the ground yelling, "I know you feel like it's your duty, but you don't have to fight! You don't!"
Nope, no message there.

I think the message was "save your damned life, you are all obviously dying" not America is a bunch of imperial pig dogs.
But, you hear what you want to hear.

You left tact behind long ago, didn't you.

Actually, from what I've heard from Spielberg about the movie... he's not quite as liberal as he used to be. In talking about the movie, he likens the aliens to the terrorists and has stated that sometimes you have no choice but to fight.
So I suspect that Cruises character may do an about face before the end of the flick.

You left tact behind long ago, didn't you.
I mean "you" as in "one," not you... but my point was still that people a) go looking for things that they want to be outraged by and b) people tend to believe things that reinforce what they already believe.
Maybe you take statements like that differently cuz of ur military experience, but it didn't seem offensive to me.

Men sacrificing themselves for others in the face of certain death is the only evidence for the existence of God I've ever seen.
The fact that I don't believe doesn't mean I don't want to believe. I'd like to see more people with that kind of selflessness. I wish I could see more of that behavior held up as an ideal instead of seeing cowardice and fear and selfishness embraced and celebrated.
Tom Cruise's character feels otherwise, apparently.
Run away, run away, be smart, save yourself. Again, it's a hell of a message.

Not to get the thread off-topic, but buzz on this movie is that Spielberg is getting away from his sappy crap, this movie is apparently an excellent display of how to Blow the Crap out of Everything, all the time, non-stop.
It's also supposed to be good, less Tom as a weird psycho over some Dawson's Creek Ho, and more Tom sitting back and letting Dakota Fanning do all the acting.

... letting Dakota Fanning do all the acting.
Most talented child perfomer in Hollywood. Better than most of the adults there.
I've been hearing that minus the special effects the movie is "okay" at best.
