It has been a rough couple years for my local economy.

The Toledo and NW Ohio area in general is often ignored for state funds.... the state of Ohio only likes spending money in the C-cities... .Columbus, Cleveland, and Cincinnati. This, among other things, is why there isn't a good, direct 4-lane highway in a somewhat straight line between Toledo and Columbus.

We now have an amazon tax... Amazon is getting a tax break on some data centers that will mean a few hundred jobs in the Columbus area, and people like me on the outskirts of the state will be paying for the roads and infrastructure for them to be there through 6% taxation on good purchased from out of state.

And recently y'all may remember that a local school levy in my district finally passed, if it failed there was going to be a several million dollar shortfall in funding and lots of school shit was on the chopping block. Research taught me that the reason there was a shortfall is because a business tax got cut: Ohio companies were required to pay a tax on inventory, and that money went directly to whatever school district in which that inventory was located. That equated to a few million dollars of my school district's budget. So Ohio cut that tax, and didn't make up for that lost money elsewhere. There is a point to make that "businesses don't pay taxes, their customers do," but the fact is that I was not paying the taxes of the local machine shops and rock quarry inventories, other businesses with deeper pockets than mine were. But now my property tax is going up a few hundred a year, so the tax is hitting a lower income entity (me) versus a higher income entity (whatever business was getting machine parts).

And this is why I won't be voting for Ohio Governor Kasich if he actually runs for President. If he wins it'll just mean more pork money for Columbus, probably at my expense.

Instead of a Northern one.

Heh, and in TN, for that matter. :-D

There was about 10 years I lived south of the Mason Dixon.

I'm not really qualified to comment due to my giant political and economic blind spot covering everything outside my immediate cranium, but Toledo was already pretty fucking depressed when I visited seven-odd years ago.

It's not great. As I said, this area gets very little state-spending-love.

Moved back here near family when my kid was born. Probably a mistake.

My county got a tax increase passed, then decided they didn't need it and aren't going to collect it.
