From here.
From what I gather: a news corp over the in the U.K. was apparently hacking phone accounts of various folk to gather more info about them. Thousands. They got caught and went from 160+ year news institution worth millions to closed-down, final edition, and arrested president in about a week. One wonders how many hackers TMZ employs.

Is that the story I have been hearing about where people always start the sentence with, "A newspaper owned by Fox News' Rupert Murdoch?"

Apparently it's something that the tabloids have been doing to celebrities for awhile, but not too many people cared very much. But these guys have been doing it to crime victims and that's finally pissed some people off enough to start cracking down. Or something like that.

The straw that broke the camel's back went something like this...

1) British teenage girl gets kidnapped and, unknown to anyone, killed.
2) "Journalists" hack her phone and access some online account of hers to figure out her whereabouts.
3) Unknown to the assholes in (2), the girl's parents were watching her online accounts and noticed one was accessed. They promptly inform the cops about the potential lead.

It snowballs predictably downhill from there.

The latest list of hack victims includes assorted celebrities, the royal family, young kidnapped girls, children with cystic fibrosis, rape victims, dead soldiers and their families, the families of 9-11 victims, wide-eyed innocent orphans, and sad little puppies and kittens that have been recently kicked.

Okay, the last couple were hyperbole, but come on. Seriously? This is absurd Hollywood villain territory here.
