The school claims it fired him, not for that, but because he never got back to them in helping to resolve the media firestorm that came from that statement.

If you watch the video, his statement also discuss slavery in the same breath. Not sure why CNN left that part out of their written piece, but it implies he feels the same way about slavery. Was he making some other point that he wasn't able to communicate? Like, "I don't know anything happened as I wasn't there."?

Also, he didn't really get fired, just moved to a new job.

He was moved to a new job in July when this all popped up, and is now being fired, cuz that's how slowly they move

Public jobs are notoriously hard to get fired from due to unions and all that. Being anything except a straight white man that isn't near retirement age complicates things further.
