You should mix up the reps, so I hear.GORDON wrote:I do 12 reps every set.
Why 12?
Because 10 reps is for girls doing kegel exercises in their vaginas.
Diet....contest?
Back when I was lifting free weights I was doing pyramidal sets, and they worked well. Start off light with high reps, end heavy with low reps, then go back down the other side in reverse. Now I just enjoy not having to think about it.TheCatt wrote:You should mix up the reps, so I hear.GORDON wrote:I do 12 reps every set.

If I can do 3 sets without busting a nut, then I know it is time to add another plate to the pile. Typically when I advance in weight I end up doing 3 sets of 12/10/8 (or thereabouts). Then I just keep doing that until I can do 12/12/12, then I know it is time to advance again. NBD.
I have just had that "because women do 10 reps with their vagina workouts" joke in my head for a month, and needed to get it out.

I hit 211.0 last Friday, right on schedule. This week is going to be fucked...
1. I successfully fought off a flu that Unk passed to me, but for 2 days I was running a slight fever and had a medium headache and it screwed up my workouts because I just didn't wanna push hard.
2. Sunday was an all-day cub scout event, so any thought of eating right was out the window.
3. Going on a mini-vacation Wednesday, so no gym/healthy eating for a few days.
But I am going to allow myself these little delays in the diet. I've been going hard for 5 (or so) months, I'll keep going hard next week. I predict 215 on Monday, but I'll be back down to 211 next Friday.

1. Feel you. My chest is getting heavy and congestion/coughing has just started. My wife and youngest just got over this plague.
2. One day of bad eating, in my history, has little impact. I ate pizza/cookies/all kinds of crap on Super Bowl day.
3. See #2. That being said, intermittent fasting can be your friend. I tend to eat breakfast, then a late lunch, and no dinner to get back on track.
Sunday was my delay day. That being said, I really, really, really, want/need to figure out how to just maintain healthy weight. So far, low carbs seems to be the answer.

Ditto, although my normal routine is to skip breakfast. Sometimes when traveling (esp flying) I'll also skip lunch and just go with caffeine. Since airport food is shitty and expensive, it doesn't feel so bad.TheCatt wrote:3. See #2. That being said, intermittent fasting can be your friend. Yeah, airports are the worst.thibodeaux wrote:Ditto, although my normal routine is to skip breakfast. Sometimes when traveling (esp flying) I'll also skip lunch and just go with caffeine. For whatever reason, skipping lunch or breakfast doesn't work as well for me. I typically end up starving, and wanting to eat the whole world around dinner.

You're getting protein in a shake now? I always thought you preferred receiving it anally?GORDON wrote:I find coffee for breakfast and a protein shake about mid morning has me not feeling hungry again until about 4 in the afternoon.... if that can be considered "fasting."

He figured the shake out. It just took a couple tries to learn it wasn't a suppository.Leisher wrote:You're getting protein in a shake now? Again, there's debate, and depending on what your goals are and how your body works.GORDON wrote:I find coffee for breakfast and a protein shake about mid morning has me not feeling hungry again until about 4 in the afternoon.... if that can be considered "fasting."
My goal is fat burning and autophagy (cells cleaning out the dead stuff). Supposedly fasting around 16 hours is good for that. There's some debate as to how many calories (like, can you put cream in your coffee?) will kick you out of autophagy.
So yeah I was down to 211 and then I went on this little minivacation up to Michigan, where lots of video was taken at a water park.
I had been feeling a little lackadaisical about my dieting.... I have lost over 30 pounds in six months, my clothes were fitting better, and after a workout I am feeling all pumped up and hardbody.... I was thinking my goal of 190 was probably more weight than I needed to lose, and maybe 205 or so would be fine.
Then I saw these vids of myself at 215 at the water park, and I see what a disgusting fatass I still am, and damn, I am newly motivated. I'm thinking maybe 185 should be my weight loss goal.

You certainly look a lot better than you did 30 pounds ago. Overall, I'd say body fat's a better goal to work towards than weight.GORDON wrote:Then I saw these vids of myself at 215 at the water park, and I see what a disgusting fatass I still am, and damn, I am newly motivated. So far I'm down 21.2 pounds (204.2 this morning). Body fat is down from 30.2% to 25.0% (17 lbs lost fat). Goal is body fat around 10-14%.

Sounds like exercise improves autophagy, or something close to it.thibodeaux wrote:Again, there's debate, and depending on what your goals are and how your body works.GORDON wrote:I find coffee for breakfast and a protein shake about mid morning has me not feeling hungry again until about 4 in the afternoon.... if that can be considered "fasting."

To try to understand why exercise does this, Dr Hojman and her team put under a microscope some of the tumours they had induced. They found that those from well-exercised mice contained more immune cells than equivalent tumours from inactive animals. Specifically, the former had double the number of cytotoxic T-cells, which kill off body cells that are damaged, malfunctioning or infected with viruses. They also had five times more natural killer cells, a type that sounds the alarm and attracts other immune cells.

A few weeks ago I mentioned a mini-vacation, 3 days in a resort up in Michigan. I weighed 211 the day we left. The place didn't have a gym, for some reason, so I went 3 days without working out for the first time in at least 6 months. And I ended up eating 3 good meals a day, breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Just normal meals, not gigantic buffet carb feeding frenzies, or anything.
When I got home 3 days later, I weighed 222. I gained 11 pounds in three days. It's insane.
In the 3 weeks since then, things have continued to be crazy, with house guests, and snow days, and all kinds of reasons why I can't fast when I want to and work out when I want to. But I am back down to 215 today, and feeling fully motivated to get back on track.
So carry on.
