The graph seems to suggest that 1 channel = 1 speaker.
Four speakers needs to do some channel splitting if it is going to be simulating 7.1.
Say "virtual" if the word "pretend" upsets you.

Geez, my mobo has 8 frikkin speaker plugs, as it is 7.1 capable. Don't they know they can get the same effect with 4 speaker plugs???

And bottom line. If I close my eyes, and hear sound coming from all around the room, does it matter if it's done with 1 or 1000000 speakers? If my ears/brain can't tell the difference, isn't it still surround sound?
My Bose surround system has the ability to adjust speaker output based on where they are in the room, obstructions in the room, etc. I put a set of headphones (which are actually microphones) on my head and tell it to configure the sound. It then starts putting test noises out of the speaker, picks them up in the mic/headphones and adjusts the sound based on objects in the room (plants, etc), obstructions (putting speakers in a decorative box if I want), etc and makes everything nice and pretty. I can put all of my speakers in cardboard boxes, and they sound like, they are all in cardboard boxes. I hit the config switch, and it adjusts the shit so there is no cardboard box sound any more. Maybe it's pretending to do that. I don't know. I just know, when I hear the sound, I don't hear the cardboard boxes any more. I bounces the sound off the walls (each channel has two speakers. One points out into the room, the other is aimed at the nearest wall. Their instructions, not mine). It uses everything in the room to bounce the sound off the walls, etc and creates an AWESOME surround experience. It does all this with 5.1 speakers. However, it beats the ever-living SHIT out of my old surround sound system. So, maybe it's all pretend, but it sounds fucking awesome!
That's what I'm looking for in headphones. Maybe it's 'pretend'. But, it's portable, private, and easier to deal with than 'real' 5.1 speakers. If I wanted that, I'd have brought the other two speakers from the basement, plugged them into the other ports on my 7.1 capable motherboard and got my surround on. But, I'm looking for it in a headphone system. Is that ok?

It's great. You're the one who had an issue with me using the phrase "pretend rear channels." Like I said, if it makes you feel better, substitute in the word "virtual."
Really don't care either way.
