Replacing a credit card

I've heard horror stories about banks telling you to GFY, arbitrarily deciding you are lying about the unauthorized usage. Not so much with credit cards.

It happens with credit cards, but your odds are better, and the short term inconveniences are almost always better.

Replacing a credit card

Post by Leisher »

Hey Catt, I was buying some plane tickets today and Delta offered me an AmEx with $500 credit and 50K bonus miles and all sorts of other goodies. It got me to thinking about my current non-work AmEx and how I should swap it out with something that earns me more. (If you say "What's in your wallet", I will reach through the screen to choke you...)

So, what's the best CC offer out there in your opinion?

I think I want to stick with AmEx, but would be willing to consider other cards.

Also, can one transfer their AmEx positive balance to another AmEx?

It kinda depends on what you want. I'm not super-plugged into the credit card scene at the moment, cuz we've reached a steady state (and abused all the CC bonus offers we could for a while).

If you want straight cashback: Citi Doublecash is a 2% card on all purchases. Bank of America has better cash-back cards, but you have to be a BOA customer with certain balances.

If you use Amazon: There's a 5% back on Amazon card.

If you fly Delta: Amex Platinum/Delta (Amex) Reserve cards are the best, BUT have huge fees. The Reserve card gives lounge access and a free companion ticket every year. Amex Platinum gives 5% back on all flights, and also has lounge access. I have the Reserve one, cuz I fly Delta each month for work + most vacations. I'm not familiar with the other AmEx cards (Gold, etc). These two typically have large sign-up bonuses (We got 150k AmEx points on each Platinum signup we did)

There's the rotating 5% cards, but I find those annoying since they have spending limits, and you have to track per quarter, etc.

There's Capital One Venture X, which has a $300 fee, but also gives you a $300 credit every year, so it's basically free.

$895 feels obscene. My wife has this card, will have to see if it's worth it any more.

Speaking of lounges, was at the airport yesterday to fly home. Went to the lounge, 20 people in line to get in (more than half the flights at Boston had been delayed, so lots of people spending more time than usual). Decided to just give up and wait like a poor in the terminal.

The lounge is pointless for me.

1. Can't drink.
2. Love to people watch.

I do not drink in the lounge. I rarely eat there either. I mostly enjoy being somewhere quieter and more relaxing. I decided that the noise of the terminal was more than I liked, and I just felt better being in the lounge when traveling. Made travel more enjoyable.
