How is that what they wanted Obamacare to be? It was a big, wet, sloppy blowjob to insurance companies. They were the ones on the exchanges, people would be penalized for not having insurance, and the subsidies the poor would get were still going to a private insurance company.

So they started with an ideal plan, and landed on the worst plan possible. And kept it a secret to the public, until they passed it.

Again, unfair to say that's what they wanted Obamacare to be. It's easy for them to say that as they didn't even read it... Although if you remember (I and Pepperidge Farms do...) they swore up and down it was NOT a single payer system.
These are not snarky questions, but legit ones:
1. Ultimately, who is paying for it?
2. Is that what Canada has because that's what I've heard Ds say they want and Canadians don't exactly love it. The "free" part is great (although we know it really isn't), but the actual treatment isn't. Same as how veterans have complained for years about the VA. I know other vets who haven't had the great experience Gordon has had. (Our VA pretty much sucks when it comes to mental care...)
3. In this system, how do doctors get rich? Important to bring the best and brightest to the field.
I don't know if I'm in favor of dismantling insurance companies or not. I hate them, but do I hate what they've become because of this unsustainable Wall St. bullshit? If they weren't so stingy on profit, would they be as hated and regarded as evil? Does the government just take over that roll? (Something we've seen in other countries, including Canada.) I don't want people to go broke due to some bad medical luck, but are insurance companies solely responsible for the high cost of medical care right now? I think 50% of the blame has to go to the providers too, right? They're the ones jacking up the prices and adding on additional services. How does putting the government in charge eliminate that?
I've heard it said, and seen it in action in certain places, that we should go back to paying doctors, including bartering. Not sure how I feel about that either.

It's better than what existed beforehand. ACA approval is decently high, and it largely works. People hate Obamacare though.

I remember how congressional staffs were initially exempt from it. They knew it was terrible from the beginning. But again, all those insurance companies paid a lot of money for that law.

No answers to my questions?
Relevant: Rs just voted to fully fund the VA, while Ds unanimously voted against it.
To be fair, here is what the Ds objected to:

I can support the abortion thing (I am WAY against not allowing abortion in rape/incest/to save the mother), but they lose me with the rest of it.But the administration did not hold back its criticism of policies in the bill it said would prevent VA medical centers from being able to perform abortions or “provide hormone therapies for the purpose of gender-affirming care.”
Other measures the White House criticized include sections Democrats say would prevent the VA from displaying LGBTQ pride flags and language that would limit administration efforts to advance equity and diversity.

Perhaps any doctor is free to stay in private practice to get rich, but any who commits 4-8 years to "public service" of the one-payer system gets student loans forgiven, while still on the regular GS pay schedule, prolly making $110k per year.

Of course, and are there estimates about what that will push our base rates up to?
I fully discount this argument. Every single time the issue is compared is boils down to "It's free!!!" Technically, it's not. Also, the quality and wait times are where everything turns gray or grey. Not always, but the vast majority of the time if there's some crazy medical situation or thing that needs expert care, people are sent or come here.
I'm NOT discounting the idea, but I do not want the fucking government anywhere near my healthcare. They do not care about us and most everything they touch turns to shit. The people in charge are far too busy filling their pockets, which will equal scaling back the care we can receive so the corporations actually doing the work can save money.
Don't believe me? Our food is poison and that's our government's doing.
I need this answered to feel good about the quality of treatment we would receive. Why would our best and brightest go into this career field? For $110K a year? Highly doubtful.

Why? It'll be less than people are paying for healthcare. Subsidized by the rich. It's nearly irrelevant.
They sure like it more than ours, and they sure pay a lot less.Leisher wrote: ↑Thu Aug 17, 2023 7:20 pm I fully discount this argument. Where the hell did $110k come from? that's ridiculous. Doctors in CANADA make $350k-$500k.

I was ballparking by the US government civilian pay scales. DC area maxes out under $200k base rate. Probably more for specialties, idk.

Eh yo, yo eh, I didn't go to US government payscale college. Was just a best guess.
My $110k guess falls into those ranges. I mentioned 4-8 years after med school, so they'd probably be in that ballpark.

Usually, I take your words as truth. Here I cannot. It just sounds like political rhetoric. There's no evidence behind it.
It's not just you. I hear all sorts of things about how awesome everything is in Canada and Europe (not just healthcare), so I do research and turns out, the great reviews are usually very cherry picked.
For example: You've said very positive things about ObamaCare, but a lawyer I know (now a partner at her firm) was her firm's ObamaCare expert. She knew more about it than any of us, and certainly any politician, and she told me it was an absolute disaster. Not after Rs blocked any pieces of it, but from before it was even passed.
Everything I've said is true.

I've never heard a good story from people who already had insurance before Obamacare. EVery anecdote I've heard has been "premiums went up, copays went up, deductibles went up." The only time I hear a good thing is "I didn't have it before, and now I do for mostly free."
When I predicted, before it passed, that the only way that worked is for everyone elses premiums, copays, and deductibles to increase, I was told I was a stupid racist and just didn't like obama cuz he's bl4ck. Not by here, elsewhere on the internet. If you knew basic economics and was able to see the really very obvious lies being told to us, you were racist because obama. After all, it's the AFFORDABLE Care Act, they were fixing health care once and for all. Of course it'll be better all around. Thy can't just lie right there in the name.
All they had to do, literally, was open up medicare/medicaid, the system that was already in place. That's it. Instead, the insurance industry bought the legislators, and the supreme court, and they get their wet, sloppy bj ACA in return, and health care industry is more fucked than at any time in history.
