the 3D is only the most popular among the high ELO because of JJ's. That and because both ballistics are on the right side, so you can put two AC5 on the right and two PPC's on the right.. So you can run the meta and jump and only expose your right side. Very safe mech in that manner.
But your 4X can carry all those ballistics, and in solo que that makes a bigger difference.
Personally i think you need to go assault.. You seem like an Atlas pilot to me.

While the Victor (mainly the DS) is one of the most used and deadly mechs in the game, for high ELO. i think its hard to use in solo que. At 80 tons it makes it the lightest of the assaults and its pretty squishy from what i hear. Its not a brawler because of its broad chest and tall stature. So unless your looking for a one trick pony (jump sniper) then go for it. But know that the best one is the hero mech and the rest of them aren't even used by the high ELOs.
Atlas is the spearhead to any assault, soak up damage and escort the rest of your team in. You know this, you've seen it many times. Slow and plodding, doesn't really "boat" any one weapon group so you need to use ballistics, missles and energy to fully utilize these mechs. The D-DC is the only mech over 40 tons with ECM.. very expensive.
The Highlander is very much like the Victor in its hardpoint setups and the JJ's. Better hitboxes than the Victor give it more survivability. I imagine it plays very similar to a Victor but does a little better with missle weapons because of the number of missle tubes. But even though its similar to the Victor the "pros" dont use these as much, not sure why.
The Banshee has one badass mech, the 3E, 4 ballistics all in one torso. and i know how much you like ballistics! But the rest are all energy based. 8 energy hardpoint make you run lasers and PPC's, runs very hot. Believe me i know, one of my Battlemasters has 8 energy hardpoints, so lots of double HS are mandatory. Don't know much about these, but i know the 3E can do lots of damage.
So i don't know what i'd consider the best assault right now. The VTR-DS is prolly considered the best in game right now. The Stalker is also a very good mech and can build LRM and sniper builds both and is really tanky. I know i see more Atlas' at our level and they can take a shit-ton of damage and dole it out at the same time. It just comes down to personal prefrence i guess.

Also, Russ Bullock, president of PGI held an AMA on Reddit last night and he answers lots of questions, and leaves many still unanswered. Pretty good read. Warning its long and there's lots to read.
The free hula girl is just for playing ten games. This is perfect for me because one of my daughters, Lola, likes watching me play and always asks me to take out my Jenner because it has the hula girl in it. Now I can get another one and put it in my CTF-4X.
Now I've got to decide on a faction. Do I go with Steiner who won last time and get the dog tags or pick a faction like Liao and try for a top ten score and get MC...

Being a Steiner myself i won the banner last time, not sure how are why i got that instead of the dogtags. The prizes were the same last time so maybe its just a random prize for the winning house.
Also, i don't read anywhere that states you gotta play these games solo. Last time you had to drop in solo que to be able to qualify, but i'm not so sure this time.
Dog tags would be cool, but I have no need for a banner. Mainly I want another hula girl.

For the briefest of moments, I was #12 on the Leaderboard. I've actually been in the top 30 all day. UPDATE: 5th place.
REALLY bad players on today. No teamwork. I've been on the losing end of 80% of my matches, yet my score is going up because I'm getting kills, assists, and doing heavy damage. It's just teams that are completely unfocused. I'm guessing a lot of new folks as they don't seem to know what they're doing.

Left for a few hours and dropped to 48th place. After a few hours, I'm back in the top 10.

I left for the lake Sunday and returned to find that I finished in 74th place in Steiner.
I'm pretty happy with that. I was in the top ten a few different times, and logged Saturday night (Sunday morning) in 13th place, and only 7 points out of 10th.
I only had two 100+ point games during the tournament too. A few more would have really moved me up the rankings.

DAYUMMM!!!! sounds like that 4X was doing some work!
I didn't have so much luck, i was constantly getting utterly destroyed! And i don't think i can attribute it a bunch of newbs on my team (even though i'd like to think that). It was like i was going against people with ELO 1000 points higher than me. It wasn't uncommon for me to end matches with less than 100 damage, just piss poor games. It pissed me off so much that i logged off and played League of Legends (i bought Braum, the new OP support).
I just looked and see that i finished in 874th place in House Stiener. LOL... glad to see that you joined the Stieners, but we didn't win this one.
I'm glad Steiner didn't win. It implies the persistent world will be competitive.

Also i found this graph on damage vs. range. Its good to see what each weapon does beyond its max range. The Gauss rifle is finally the premier sniper weapon for snipers in ballistics.
I'm not thrilled with this new wave of AC nerfs. Meanwhile, lasers continue to get buffed?
How are you going to try and make brawling a thing when you haven't yet eliminated pop tarting?
I do like that they're nerfing air strikes and artillery. That's long overdue.

Of course you don't like them AC nerfs, it what your 4X lives by!
But i think its good, because now you can get in a little closer to those AC users without worrying about getting plunked constantly from 1000 meters. I think this promotes brawling a little more.
Also i follow Russ on Twitter and he said last night that JJ nerfs are coming. They are adding heat to them, making bigger mechs take more damage when they fall etc.. This is much needed.
Nobody uses small lasers and the MPL buff is slight at best, i think lasers need help. The heat build up and the fact you gotta hold your shot on target for the duration make them harder to use. The pinpoint damage that the AC delivers with much less heat make it the superior weapon right now.
