I learned recently that Toledo Public Schools (which I've never been in) has a competitive "College High School." I don't know exactly what they call it. The rest of TPS is normal city hoodlums, but the bright kids can compete to go to this "we actually want to learn" school and like when you graduate high school, you also have an Associate's Degree because the classes are legit and translate to college courses.

There should be a lot more stuff like that, and it's a shame that most of those 99th percentile fourth graders will still have to survive the 25th percentile assholes when they hit adolescence.

Yeah, I don't understand the "let the geniuses rot/teach themselves, and waste $$ on the bottom 25%" approach, or maybe that's just our school system.

Woke/everyone gets a trophy/spanking is bad parenting/everything is racism and sexism/etc. and teaching only so kids can pass a test that determines a school's funding is why our education system sucks ass.

Teachers have zero authority and/or respect from students. Kids spend all day on their phones. We push stupid things like CC and teachers spend more time discussing social issues than educating. Lessons come from the internet while the teacher just babysits.

We are well and good on the road to a populace of uneducated morons.

All the better to control I guess.

Ohio governor just introduced a bill to ban phones in public schools.

You know I'm 100% for that. My understanding is that a minority of parents are pushing back because it restricts their free speech to their kids.

I do agree here. Unless it's for exceptional cases.

Yeah.

Honestly, still a fan of CC.

I believe I have had to swat each of my kids on the rump once and they were very young. In the words of Danny Vermin, "Once."

As Bill Burr once said about swatting your kids, "I'm not saying take your day out on them." A single swat on the ass that happens VERY infrequently helps to correct and set behavior. You cannot do it daily or for everything. That's abuse. And you cannot be doing it long term. Again, that's abuse.

There's a difference between punishment and abuse. Again, the extremes of any debate are usually wrong.

Kids, because they're people, are different and there's no one right or wrong way to raise them. Some kids won't listen, but will if they believe there could be a physical consequence, and vice versa.

Same with parents. I know parents who are very much against spanking, but pinch their kids. I know parents who never touch their kids, but call them "fucking retards" and other such things all the time.

Nothing wrong with that. For it's intended purpose, it was a good tool. However, teaching math to elementary kids was not it's intended purpose.

Maximbady is always entertaining, but this one is interesting because is shows how poorly the education system prepares people to function in society. We really need more financial training in schools, although I'm sure the corporate world wouldn't like that. They just want dumb consumers.

This level of ignorance, not to mention the division shit like this causes, being so blatantly displayed should result in an immediate termination.

Yeah, slavery was bad, but it happened to every race by every race, still happens today (and nobody seems to give two shits about it, which says everything you need to know about the "reparations crowd"), and whitey didn't steal your ancestors, they bought them from your ancestors.

This woman is obviously the butt of the joke here, but I respect her and the entire interaction.

She asked a question, got a very convincing answer, considered it, and accepted it. This is EXACTLY how a rational conversation should work. She didn't argue back with nonsense or refuse to accept the answer she was given.

Props to both, and fuck yes public schools and their employees should be liable if they were complicit in sexual abuse.

Seattle parents and school board members are calling on the district to come up with a better plan for advanced learning.

At a school board meeting Wednesday, Seattle Public Schools officials gave an update on the district's highly capable services.

It comes as the district is in the process of sunsetting dedicated schools for advanced learners. Under the new approach, advanced learning is supposed to be embedded in neighborhood schools, and teachers are expected to personalize lesson plans to every kids' needs and abilities.

These changes are part of an effort to address longstanding equity concerns. Historically, Black and Hispanic students have been underrepresented in this program. The district is also moving to universal screening, so a family doesn't need to pay for outside testing or an educator's recommendation to get into the program.

District data shared Wednesday show efforts to make the program more equitable are starting to work — the number of Black, Hispanic, Asian, and multiracial students identified as highly capable increased in 2024.
Stop kneecapping our country.

I used to legit sit and read everything I could get my hands on. I read an encyclopedia set from A-Z. Hardy Boys. Encyclopedia Brown. Lots of biographies of serial killers (cop household). Most of the "classics" (some Shakespeare, Moby Dick, Swiss Family Robinson, Scarlet Letter, F451, Catcher in the Rye, all of Twain's novels, and so on). Comic books from Archie to X-Men. And the back of every bottle of shampoo, conditioner, and medicine in the house...IYKYK...

Maybe this is why Hollywood's writing sucks anymore? They've never had to develop or use their imagination.
