I remember the church-key oil cans. But I never saw one with beer in it.

GORDON, I think you are probably ... hmmmm ..... 44?

Exactly right.

As I said, I was seeing these things at age 5 or younger, 1975ish. They were about gone then except out in the hinterlands where I lived.

I turn 43 this year and also lived in hinterlands, so our childhood cultures are probably similar.

I don't recall anyone drinking beer, though. But that's probably because I come from a family of staunch tea-totaling middle class methodists. Poor people drink beer. Rich people drink wine. They only drink iced tea as the lord intended.

Grew up 3 miles from the shore of Lake Erie with a grandfather who was a fishing boat captain (Lake Erie used to have commercial fisheries before the sturgeon were annihilated). Living next to a bar. With a family of drinkers and smokers. I am sitting about 150 yards from that house right now, and my mother now owns that bar.

So, beer cans.

The "Schlitz" cans in the above link strike the biggest memory chord.

It's 'teetotaling'. Unless you were being intentionally wry.

Will you accept accidentally wry?

My grandmother on that side was severely alcoholic (later recovering). It never occurred to me before, but that probably had a lot to do with the attitudes about alcohol on that side of my family.

Huh. And now it seems completely obvious and I am dumb. They fooled me with all the god talk.

I try to stop it after 00:01, but before the buzzer/beep. So the countdown finished, but never beeped.

As an added bonus, I think that's a banded sea krait ...

... it's catching. Rather venomous when they decide to bite.
