But it is a measure of something that does not exist in a vacuum.

It's more than that, it's a measurement of speed constructed in such a way that it will almost never apply directly to what it is measuring. What I mean is:
...it's the speed of sound at sea level...

How often are planes flying at a multiple of the speed of sound at an altitude of 0 feet above sea level? The oddity of applying it to spacecraft already exists in every application, just to a much lesser degree.

I once heard that the Israeli air force was the only one in the world that had altimeters that gave readings below sea level.
It was awhile ago, and I'm not sure how accurate it was. The reason for the special altimeters was because they had large areas (like the Dead Sea) that are below sea level.

Also true. Acceleration due to gravity varies ever so slightly with altitude and latitude, which is why sports records set in High Mile Stadium are unduly seen as records*.

I once had my breakfast randomly bought by a driver ahead of me in line. I've always been meaning to pay it forward.

I had this happen to me this year.

I am totally shaming myself into a random act of kindness.

Such actions make me very, very suspicious.
