				It's more than that, it's a measurement of speed constructed in such a way that it will almost never apply directly to what it is measuring.  What I mean is:
...it's the speed of sound at sea level...
How often are planes flying at a multiple of the speed of sound at an altitude of 0 feet above sea level?  The oddity of applying it to spacecraft already exists in every application, just to a much lesser degree.

Also true.  Acceleration due to gravity varies ever so slightly with altitude and latitude, which is why sports records set in High Mile Stadium are unduly seen as records*.
