This was all just a political poker move by Cruz, he's banking on Trump losing in the general election and if he does then Cruz becomes top dog in the republican party. If Trump wins.. well Cruz's all in move will have backfired and he will fall by the wayside as Trump assumes the power as president.

Not only did Trump and his people know, but Manafort had his people out whipping up the boos. There is a lot to unpack here.

I agree that this is a calculated rick. But not only will this have an upside if Trump loses, it will also have an upside if Trump wins and sucks really bad. Combined, the odds of this being bad long term are slim. If Trump wins and he literally flips his approval numbers and is the face of the new Republican party, then Cruz isn't going to have a future in that with or without an endorsement.

All the cries from politicians are coming for those that have already hitched their wagon to the anchor of the Titanic (seriously mixing some metaphors here). They know when this thing goes down, the few that didn't fold are the ones with a leg up next time by default. And they know this is going to go down. You also see that the only politico close to Cruz in intelligence is Newt Gingrich (though I don't care much for him) and he figured it out. After the speech, Newt said, "Vote for the pro freedom and pro Constitution guy? Obviously that's Trump!"

But everything last night was a perfect example. If they had just let Ted speak and applauded and said at the end, "Yup! I, Donald J Trump, am the freedom and Constitution candidate!" it would have been simply seen as a face saving soft endorsement by Cruz and the story would have been Mike Pence as the relatively unknown VP pick.
