That's part of what needs to go for Rust to be successful.

Working for hours to build a building that can be leveled in seconds does not inspire folks to stick around for the long haul.

Agreed. In what is at it's core a crafting game it should take longer to destroy than to create or it's out of balance.

Yeah but things are really easy to build now. And the worlds are huge.

Here's a few hours work on the 150/200 pop server I started tonight with this patch/wipe.

3 separate foundations to get to the top of the boulder, so three layers. My cupboard grants like 150 feet of build protection from the top of the bolder.

Neighbors all over. I wonder how long until people start getting launchers and grenades?

Here's the server map

i love this game, but until my entire night of work can't be destroyed in less than 5 minutes it will never succeed.

Yeah, it's a problem.

On the other hand, I've got yesterday and today to play and then i'm going away until Tuesday. So i'll make lots of enemies, set lots of bear traps, and hope to take some invading motherfuckers with me.

And it needs to take longer than 5 minutes to destroy your house at your house; it doesn't matter if it took them a week of working to make those rockets, if your experience of it is that they just turned up and blew all your work away in no time at all it will feel unbalanced as all hell and make you not want to play anymore.

Perception matters.

I guess to be fair Rocket launchers and ammo are crazy expensive and all I have right now is a pistol with 4 bullets and I feel like Rambo. I don't even know how much the Launcher costs, but the rockets are roughly half a c4.

But yeah, a hit team of 5-6 people with rocket launchers, ludicrous resources aside, could easily wreck your base in 10m.

For me, this is why the fresh wipes are so fun, I tend to get bored with the map and situation after 3-4 days if I don't get raided anyway.

Off the top of my head I can think of one way to balance it. These are makeshift post-apocalypse materials, so let's simulate that slap-dash feel. Make it so that for every 10 minutes the rocket exists it has a cumulative 5% chance to misfire and blow up the launcher. This will encourage attackers to bring the raws and make rockets on site to attack with. And make the crafting time at least a minute. This will slow down most attacks and give the defenders time to counter.

Well-coordinated attackers with a crafting team and fire team and a small arms cover-fire team with some planning could compensate for these limitations, but it's not the people who are using excellent strategy and tactics that are part of the perceptual problem of the unfairness of rockets.

Damn that is good idea. You are making rockets out of string and used gum, so it totally should have a chance of exploding on you as you sprint naked through the woods.

I still say the game will only truly be awesome when you can slapdash together a tactical nuke and space program.

The new "Rust Legacy Inspired" map comes out today, per rumors. I'll give it a go on a newly wiped server tonight with the new updates. SMGs and new Grenades too, I believe.

Not planning on traveling for once this weekend if I can tempt anyone who wants to create a DTMAN weekend battle-fortress.

With the new "assign to a friend" ability of sleeping bags, it's never been easier to play together!

New Update. New Week.

Went back to the pre-genned servers, they are much more fun, full of landmarks, and good rocks to build on.

Built one of the new paper maps. It's pretty rad, when it is in your inventory it auto maps the area you are exploring. You get hold the G button down to view it, and then right click to draw on it like the signs. If you die with it, though, you basically give the enemies a map to your house...

Speaking of which, you can make bases inaccessible to anyone but yourself but destroying the stairs after you use them to get up on rocks. Only you can build in your "cone," so it doesn't matter how many walls the bad dudes tear down on the ground level, they can't get up.

And finally, I tried the new "beancan grenades" last night. Very weak and small radius, but decent damage to players. Only problem is they only explode 60% of the time or so. Other times they just fizzle out and lay there. Then someone could pick it up and throw it back at you (it seems to have a 50~% chance of exploding in their faces when they try this).

Last night a naked with a buncha wood was trying to get a tower placed to jump on my base, he couldn't get his foundation down and was just standing there trying to figure it out. I snuck up behind him and rolled a grenade at his feet. BOOOOM!! (it actually exploded, a miracle) fun stuff.
