Rust - A thread for dying
They update that dev blog every Friday, and yes, Gary admitted in the first or second one that the entire game of Rust was built using other people's code, and it was essentially just a theory for a game.
Now they're actually working on building the game we've been playing.

Dev Blog 9's revelation?
Thet decided that they will no longer update the version of Rust everyone plays because it's easier to start from scratch. That's not saying they're starting over right now, but all the work over the last few months is being putting into the new game.
Once enough people switch to the new game, they'll make it the default over the current version. Currently, AI and building aren't in, so they expect people won't come over until those are in.

I've played a ton of hours, and only this weekend did I experience house decay live. I was checking out a house and there was a loud crumbling noise, and a visible explosion of dirt and wood. It was the metal doors on the house I was next to decaying. Pretty cool.
On a different note, this server that I discovered recently is the most interesting server I've ever seen.
To bullet point it:
-They are very strict about hacking and exploiting. They aren't afraid of using the ban hammer. It's gotten them a lot of DDOS attacks.
-There is a justice system with cops, a court, a judge, jail, and executions.
-KOSing is not allowed. Instead, bandits roam the land and will rob you at gunpoint. Comply and live. Run or disobey and die. It's a small touch to remove the deathmatch aspect of the game.
-If you are murdered, and there are no witnesses, your killer will get away with it.
-Guns, ammo, research kits, C4, etc. are not found in crates. They must be purchased at a store (or bought/traded from other players). C4 can still be found in airdrops.
-Paper is the currency, and is far more common than on other servers.
-There are towns. Usually a town represents a faction, although there is a slum town, and there is a main town where the store and court are located. A command will teleport you to that town, so the majority of the server population builds in that area. (Near small rad)

The latest DevBlog has a quick video in it, and I've got to say, the new game looks gorgeous.
Oddly, the blog also ends with a plug for The Forest, which I would think is a Rust competitor.
I was just scanning the modded servers looking for new themes and variants, and there is a server with 541 players connected to it right now. Holy shit.

In keeping with the Ultima Online feel, Rust added stealing yesterday. From the dev blog:
"You can actually loot alive, awake players if you stand close enough to them. This seems like something that should be possible, but it’s a bit overpowered right now. You can literally take the rock out of the other player’s hand before they kill you if you’re fast enough. I’m leaving it in to see if it causes any significant issues, or whether it offers more emergent gameplay.. my gut feeling is that we’ll have to nerf it a bit, say, add a progress bar to looting stuff – so the other player has a chance to realise what’s going on."

Everything new is just on the experimental side. (right?)
There's really nothing to do there as they're building the game from scratch, and it's more a tech demo of that build.
They are getting closer to allowing folks to start hosting experimental servers though.

They have also added Easy Anti Cheat on the experimental version, if that hasn't been mentioned yet.
Good things to come, but still waiting it out.
I imagine the best quality games will be had as soon as it hits a "playable" rev. A few weeks before the hackers can figure out the new code and anticheat.

Rust still not done, but studio is working on a new game anyway.

Long story short: The Rust design team is still working on Rust, but other folks in the company are working on this new game.
However, there's one thing in his comments that bug me:
What? First of all, that's a terrible analogy because Dominos isn't giving me that pizza until it's done. (For fun, let me point out that I'm also buying it "early access". It hasn't been made yet.)
Second, my purchase of that pizza sure as hell does fund Dominos. Is Gary insane? Does he not understand business 101? Does he think funding comes from magical fairies and sales mean nothing?
Also, is he implying we aren't actually buying anything but early access when we buy a Steam EA game? I'd be willing to bet that if that particular message was distributed to the masses as gospel, Steam's EA program would die a quick death.
In other news, he's thisclose to pulling the plug on the legacy game, but is scared of pissing off hosts and players.

I don't think that's how to interpret it.Leisher wrote:In other news, he's thisclose to pulling the plug on the legacy game, but is scared of pissing off hosts and players.
I really have no outrage here. His business, his decisions. I got enough fun for my whatever $ it was I spent on Rust. If there's most fun in the future, yay, if there's a different better game to play, yay for that too.
It's not me, it's someone else.

I wasn't saying he was pulling the plug on Rust. He's considering pulling the plug on legacy Rust, and making the new version the default.
So the game we've all played for so long would be gone as the default (but probably live on via private servers), and it'd be replaced by the new Rust they've developed from the ground up.
Based on the Developer's Logs, I'd say they're very close to where the original Rust was when it went Early Access.

I don't get the outrage. If he were talking about abandoning Rust uncompleted then I could understand. But that's not the case at all.
Still, I doubt I'll go early access on another game from them until after they get the first one released. One early access per developer at a time seems like a good personal policy.
