Great bio Leisher!

Troy, I decided to use the haunted background that u offered me last night. If u check my character sheet I've filled in all the necessary parts but I still need to roll for the gothic trinket and u will need to let me know what's in the monster hunters pack.

Also, using that background will change my bio just a bit to make it fit but I've already got ideas for that. And the fact that one of the traits was being born under a "dark star" and I already had an idea about being a Darkstar, the theme fits perfectly.

BeeDee is very secretive, and does not wish to share his life story at this time.

Awesome! For everyone else, there was a special background that I could give out to a PC in the campaign before we kick off.

Mordigan was on last night and seemed up to the task!

Mordigan no longer has the "Soldier" background and loses those skills and equipment. (as he sees fit)

Instead, Mordigan's background is "The Haunted One."

In addition to your "Darkstar" Fighter origin and the story, you have:
  • A different selection of skills and languages you can choose
A random gothic trinket (we'll roll for it tonight)
    Common clothes
A monster hunter pack "A chest, a crowbar, a hammer, three wooden stakes, a holy symbol, a flask of holy water, A set of manacles, a steel mirror, a flask of oil, a tinderbox, and 3 torches."
    1 silver piece
You have acquired some (limited) knowledge of monsters and have had experiences hunting them. You may attempt history checks to see if you have seen a particular monster before, and if you have, you may have insight into their physiology or habits.

Thanks! I wanted to do something that fit the world, and gave him interesting backstory elements that could come into play in the future. Not to mention explain who he is at his core, and what skills he possesses.

Tonight should be a lot of fun. I've been listening to the Adventure Zone podcast from the beginning whenever I'm not listening to Bill Burr, Hollywood Babble-On, or Bill Simmons. It is pretty damn funny, and yet helpful. I'm only 5 episodes into their adventure, and I already was thinking, "This is where Troy got his idea for our first adventure!" Also, the Black Spider encounter was fucking hilarious. I hope our DM gets to give an NPC a moment like Brian and Bryan.

Hahahaha. Yes! I will try my dardness. I'll also borrow a few Griffin character voices when I run out of ideas.

The Magical Brian scene is what absolutely hooked me into that podcast.

The party has got themselves into a pickle.

"Dinner Party At the Durst Mansion"

Session 2

The party began the morning by traveling along the road to the village of Barovia.

Image

The party met Ismark, a local noble who had recently suffered a death in the family. He wanted their aid in a caper he had planned that evening. He was going to use his invitation to a local dinner party at a wealthy mansion to steal weapons. Weapons to be used against against the Dark Lord.

The plan involved half the party posing as nobles and rubbing shoulders with the elite.

The rest of the party was going to slip into the upstairs rooms unnoticed, casing the house for a key to the Durst family vault.

The party agreed to the job and were eventually hired for 5 platinum pieces a man, and the use of Ismark's private room at the tavern to plan their caper.

Ismark and his band arrived at the Durst Mansion late, after some confusion and attempted communication to various bland npcs in the area.

Image

The Durst butler and chief servant, Alfred, managed to insult each member of the party. He extracted the noble forfeiture of weapons, customary in Barovia.

When the party arrived into the entrance floor, there was a loud, and ongoing dinner party in the north hall.

Alfred invited Ismark and his friends to make themselves comfortable in a well appointed hunting lounge in the south hall.

The nobles made themselves comfortable, Ismark and BeeDee staring alluringly into each other's eyes over champagne and dinner sandwiches. Koban committed crossbow theft.

The "servants" Alex, Zelda and Mordigan split up and explored the second and third floors of the sprawling Durst mansion.

Avoiding a music room with a buzzing orchestra, Zelda explored a servants quarters on the second floor, finding no leads.

Alex found the master bedroom on the third floor. He found items of significant value, but elected not to pilfer them.

Mordigan and Zelda searched the library, Mordigan discovered a secret study behind a bookshelf, in it was wooden chest.

The chest had:
A body,which they moved
A pouch with 25 platinum pieces. They split it.
They found a key, marked with a D.
There was also some reading material and a deed to a windmill. They took that too.

Ismark and Koban approached the dinner hall. BeeDee kept watch. As they approached and opened the door, the noise died immediately. What greeted them was an empty dining hall. A table set for many guests, champagne and finger sandwiches... but no other people.

A woman in dark robes appeared at the top of the third floor stairway, Ariana.

Loudly, and with much flare, she tolled a bell and marked the party to their fate while preparing a spell in her right hand.

One toll for Ismark to his death for private matters concerning her Dark Lord. Another toll from her Master as a greeting to the party. He hoped they would prove "interesting." Or else.

She lifted her hand over the open stairwell, and a massive blast of transformation magic engulfed the house. Shaking each piece of furniture, item and decoration down to the floor boards. Weary, she falls over exhausted - only for a ceremonial suit of armor to gracefully grab her, with the precision and skill of an animated object.

On the second level, other armored plate-mail suits awoke and sprang to attack.

In the hunters den, the stuffed wolves are now all too real. Will our heroes survive the evening in THE DURST MANSION?

Troy, you are killing it. Seriously, doing a great job. I dig the voices, I like that you're prepared, and you're even dealing with distractions well. Love these breakdowns, and it's perfect to remind us where we are for the next session. (Plus, I want to see what that "T" is in the Hunting Room.

I do have a question about alignment. Will our alignments change based upon our actions? I noticed you said to Alex last night when he put back some platinum that maybe he was good and not neutral. So if they can change, how many actions does it take, and will you tell us? I assume it's not a massive life changer for everyone, but Alex is not taking valuables with perfect opportunities, we've got a neutral fighter stealing things without the party's knowledge and trying to intimidate everyone he meets, a good druid who is now an accomplice to the fighter's crime and complicit in hiding it from the other party members, a rogue who isn't stealing everything in sight, and a LG paladin whose first instinct is to murder a priest and burn down the only windmill producing bread for a community.

At some point we have to be penalized for not acting like our alignment, correct? But what is the punishment? I assume if anyone turns evil the Paladin will have major issues with them? What the hell happens if he loses Lawful Good? Does he just become a fighter? Would anyone else suffer severe ramifications?

As for our party, we need to probably figure some shit out...
-I think we need to read those character backgrounds, so we know what's up. The "mother's tea" thing that Troy threw at me had a purpose based on Koban's backstory. Mordigan's backstory is clearly going to come into play here during this campaign, so we should all have a clue about it. We're all guilty of this. I thought Zelda was a Cleric until last night.
-I think we need to have a talker for the party when meeting NPCs unless circumstances are specific to another party member. Maybe do a Family Feud type thing where the other folks give that person questions or things to say, but the DM only deals with one of us?
-I know I'll take flak for this, but we need less chatter. Troy had to repeat things multiple times because people kept talking over him or weren't listening.

Thanks!

First, I really liked some of the creativeness and problem solving the party showed in what was a bit of a marathon session last night. We got through a ton of material.

Some creative solutions I didn't account for were acted upon or mused about. Zelda seizing action and finally opening the Dwarf door, BeeDee using a dinner knife not to lose face at the noble weapon ceremony, The noble boys attempting poor acrobatics to try to get past the Suit of Armor barring them from the second level, Mordigan looting the secret study before slipping and crashing into a bookshelf. Alex the urchin street didn't pilfer a noble master bedroom.

Alignments can change, certainly. More likely to change in key pivotal times, like what Alex did upstairs. His actions definitely hit a threshold where he and I had a discussion about his alignment. As a DM i'll try to figure out subtle ways of letting you guys know alignment changes have occurred if the PC decides they are going that way.

I apologize if I did some things out of character last night. I was drinking whiskey and I think I had too much.. in fact the last thing I remember was being on the second floor with Zelda, don't remember taking anything from a chest.

So how much happened after that? I woke up this morning and I was still logged into the game.

Don’t worry about, we definitely went a bit long. Zelda complained about it being a long session, too. 3 hours max is more ideal.

When it got to your turn after the trap was sprung. I tried to make one action for you. I tried to have you move into main library room and attempt to push the bookcase over to make some space for a fight. I rolled a critical one. We had to stop there and think about what happened.

My thought is that Mordigan ought to start the next session dazed, but otherwise fine, laying on top of the the middle library bookcase that you successfully managed to topple, albeit with your head. Should tidy things up and you can take it from there :)

Couple of thoughts:
-Looking at those images of our last fight, both Xs belong to Koban. The rest of you are welcome to join the fight whenever you want. :D
-It's hilarious that our fighter passed out in real life at the same time his character stumbled into a bookshelf and hit his head.
-Mordigan trying to have conversations (that's an s as in multiple times) with dulls after it already being established that they were incapable of normal conversation was pretty funny. That would have made for a great moment on our podcast...

25 platinum that's lots of coin!

Of course i plan on splitting that with the group when we all meet up again. Looks like were all on different floors and in a fight, this could get hairy.

...Did i start all of this?

You didn't that night. You tried to pocket the whole thing until Troy told you that Zelda could see you. So you gave her 13 platinum to basically shut her up. HA!

BTW, giving the witness the majority of the money to shut them up was smart as hell!

Truthfully, you don't have to split loot if you don't want to as your character is neutral. Zelda, however, being good in alignment probably wouldn't be a party to hiding it from the rest of the party. Not saying she'd turn you in, but she wouldn't keep her 13 a secret. (Is that how alignments work?)

i think this whole thing about alignment is being looked at a little to cut and dry. There are many shades of grey in being good vs evil and thats lawful vs chaotic. I'll refer to this webpage again as i think it does a really good job of explaining the alignment system.

http://easydamus.com/alignment.html

Just because Zelda is of the "good" alignment, she is also chaotic.
A chaotic good character acts as his conscience directs him with little regard for what others expect of him. He makes his own way, but he's kind and benevolent. He believes in goodness and right but has little use for laws and regulations.
So that implies to me that she is good
"Good" implies altruism, respect for life, and a concern for the dignity of sentient beings.
but if she has an opportunity to get ahead in ways that aren't necessarily hurting someone then she might take the opportunity. She's a rebel.

And when i read about my intimidation attempts, i don't think that's necessarily an evil move. Infact i could see a good character using intimidation to get something they want. Now did i use it maybe a few too many times Friday night? maybe. But i guess i was looking at it as playing to my character's strengths. I'm profiecent in the art of intimidation so i have a better chance at getting a successful roll in a conversation. To me i feel like i was just trying to roll play the character i have made.

And i believe that both Koban and Zelda are chaotic good, right? If thats the case i also see this
He hates it when people try to intimidate others and tell them what to do
That could be a time when you two roll play and set my ass straight or intervene in the conversation, it could be a fun little ongoing story that we all have.

Either way, its my first time playing this too but i don't want the alignment thing getting in the way of how people are playing. Sure, if BeeDee was to walk into a village and rape a pillage every woman then that might be a problem. But i'd rather people keep it in the back of their mind and roll play your character to their strengths and see where the story goes.

Let me start by saying, playing a character versus playing to your alignment are two completely different topics. They're very, very much related, but they are different.

I have zero issue with anyone playing their character how they want. If that includes betrayal, loyalty, stealing, murder, etc. so be it. However, alignment is a different topic because it can affect the campaign, the party, specific character abilities, item use, etc.

So alignment MUST be given attention, and you even mention it in your post:
Stranger wrote: That could be a time when you two roll play and set my ass straight or intervene in the conversation, it could be a fun little ongoing story that we all have.
You probably missed it, but our DM even suggested an alignment change during our adventure over Alex's actions. If he can go from neutral to neutral good based on NOT stealing, then why wouldn't you go from neutral to neutral evil based on stealing, bribery, and conspiring against your teammates? That site you linked is a good source of info, but the DM ultimately is responsible for determining how we're playing.

Not picking on Gordon here, but his character is the best example as it's such an extreme and very much affected by alignment... In reality, our LG Paladin should be the team cop. He should be the one poo-pooing any of us doing unlawful or evil things. He should be the cooler head in every situation. If he does and/or says nothing when we break the law or do something evil, then he's not playing to the alignment. More so, if he does the acts himself. That's when his alignment MUST change, which I believe for a Paladin would be catastrophic.

So I'm with you on playing your character, but it must match your alignment! This is something even our DM missed Friday, and is just occurring to me. I was in a room with BeeDee and I searched two cabinets, picked a lock, and was encouraged to steal. Searching the cabinets and picking the lock was fully understandable based upon the mission, however had I blatantly stolen anything in front of BeeDee, he should have had to roll perception to see if he saw me and then confront me on it. Now I did go back and "steal" the crossbow, but that was more of a commandeering based upon the situation, and thus, would have been an action BeeDee could approve.
Stranger wrote: Now did i use it maybe a few too many times Friday night? maybe.
Literally, every single character we met... :D

I get it too. I want to use my Thieves Cant on everyone.

Perhaps our DM will allow us to have general rules that:
1. When meeting people Mordigan tries to be intimidating.
2. Koban will typically say something in Thieves Cant to everyone he meets just in case.

Your rule might actually work better than mine. In your case, he could roll and if things aren't progressing smoothly in a conversation he could say, "Mordigan, you notice a bead of sweat rolling down the man's face" or "Mordigan notices the guy keeps looking at him nervously". At that moment, you could RP your guy getting a bit closer or doing something more threatening to take advantage of that intimidation.

I don't know, I'm spitballing.

Pulling a sword on a priest and telling the DM and the party you want to kill him because you don't trust the situation has nothing to do with politeness or niceties. Suggesting we burn down the only windmill and producer of bread for the town was either not the suggestion of LG character or a joke?

Again, not picking on you, but your character is the most extreme alignment. Play the character however you want, but alignment IS a factor and cannot be ignored.
