I saw that yesterday and there are a couple of notes that people are ignoring:
1. It isn't a multiplayer game and the developer has been screaming that to deaf ears.
2. Lots of reasons were cited as to why those guys couldn't see one another.

Is anyone buying this on Friday?

The D&D Online I played a long time ago was like that. You could see other people in the towns where PvP was impossible anyway, but once you left the city gates you were in an instanced world, just you vs. the monsters. You could party up with people and play co-op, and that's fine, but like they said... it isn't really an MMO, it's just a game with a really elaborate lobby where you can see other players.

Considering it hasn't officially been released yet there may be some code on the servers that hasn't been activated yet that would have let them see each other and interact. Although I can't load that article link at work for some reason so maybe that possibility was already addressed.

I'm interested in this game, but then it sort of feeds into how I play MMOs anyway. I never group up, I never coop, I just solo in the online environment. I don't play with other people, I just sort of play near other people.

It's getting killed right now in Steam reviews. Lots of folks unable to get the game to launch.

In this case it seems to go way beyond "not living up to the hype" and into "developers made fraudulent claims about the game in order to increase sales".

At this point I'm still planning to buy it ... when it is on sale for about $5, as that's how much it seems to be worth at the moment.

Aye, that's bullshit. We only let politicians and cops lie that badly for a living.

No shit.
Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida knows how you feel, No Man’s Sky players. He says he enjoyed the game, but understands why people are so upset about director Sean Murray’s tendency to over-promise and under-deliver.
Can you feel the empathy?

Official subreddit was shut down, then reopened.

Dodged a bullet not buying this at launch.
