Doesn't the gov't just buy storage space and bulk PCs like everyone else?

For new stuff, sure. But not for pre-existing things. Not if the old ones are still running. No matter how badly they are doing it.

The government never replaces anything until it has exploded or caught fire.

I remember a few years ago the IRS tried to update their systems and apparently used the same company that made Obamacare.com because they spent billions and got nothing that worked.

I think this is saying that the person in charge of this data gave root access to a contractor in China.

More or less.

DHS's excuse: we fucked up SO bad, that even modern encryption wouldn't have made a difference, so ... uh ... no harm, no foul.
Department of Homeland Security Assistant Secretary for Cybersecurity Dr. Andy Ozment testified that encryption would "not have helped in this case" because the attackers had gained valid user credentials to the systems that they attacked—likely through social engineering. And because of the lack of multifactor authentication on these systems, the attackers would have been able to use those credentials at will to access systems from within and potentially even from outside the network.

House Oversight Chairman Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) told Archuleta and OPM Chief Information Officer Donna Seymour, "You failed utterly and totally."

Wow. I have a more secure RDP login procedure at work. Let's remember these are the same piece of shit douche holes that have a legion of otherwise unemployable retards at every airport. I guess $38.2B a year isn't enough for one DHS admin to take a University of Phoenix IT security class. Thanks again for handing us this unstoppable Frankenstein's monster of bureaucracy, Dubyuh. Eventually the terrorists will realize they only need to put in one, maybe two good attacks every decade. The gov't will spend itself to death.

US still hates sick vets. Somehow the $150B/yr that department gets isn't enough for proper medical care. I'm sure they'll do better with Obamacare.

Never mind that black people say "nigger" a billion times more than whites.
"Racism, we are not cured of it," Obama said. "And it's not just a matter of it not being polite to say nigger in public. That's not the measure of whether racism still exists or not. It's not just a matter of overt discrimination. Societies don't, overnight, completely erase everything that happened 200 to 300 years prior."

Good thing that what happened 200 to 300 years ago has been longer than "overnight."

Obama really hoping Supreme Court sees things his way.
Burwell said the Obama administration would be unable to assist millions of Americans who have enrolled through the federal health insurance marketplace. The enrollees who received health coverage from Healthcare.gov could lose their medical insurance pending on the Supreme Court's ruling in the King vs. Burwell case, which relates to the federal subsidies enrollees receive.

"We don't believe there is an administration solution that would undo all of that damage," said Burwell to CNN.

18M hacked. No one is responsible.
Grilled on whether anyone takes responsibility, Archuleta said only the perpetrators should be blamed -- she said current failures result from decades of meager investment in security systems, but said changes are being made and in fact helped detect the latest breaches.
...
"I don't believe anyone is personally responsible," OPM Director Katherine Archuleta said Tuesday.

The buck stops ... over there, somewhere else.
