Reading more and more. . .
Most popular complaints:
C4 is OP.
People blow off your door and replace it with one of their own so you can't open it.
People build onto your house blocking your door.
I'm guessing the second two would be addressed by an admin on a 'no griefing' server. But what about stairs on the outside? Dunno. But ya. Lots of flaws in home security. Just when you think you've got it figured out, the griefers find a new way to fuck you over.
So, it's only a matter of time before we lose all our entry doors to griefers and then have to scrounge our own C4 to get our house back.
I don't agree that C4 is OP. It's that housing mechanics are flawed. I guess removing C4 does 'fix' some the housing flaws though. Even if you build an unbuildable foundation around your house, it will have to be deep enough that they can't build high enough to jump from a higher stairs, down to your house and survive. Would two foundation rows be enough? I'm reading something about 'gates' for home security. Anyone know what those are? People are complaining that they are too expensive at 520 wood.

I read that it was a floor at a time.

Definitely feel we should stick to non-griefing servers. I'm a pvp nerd but that's some DayZ shit and they can keep it in that game. I like non-combat logging too.
The first thing on the dev board under "gameplay" is that they were working on house "ownership" coding. Then you could delete your items, or someone elses if they are blocking you out.

Cake, on my research server there's a house near mine using gates. The rest of their house is exposed, but you can't get to the front door.

Can't build stairs over gates?

Ya, I don't know what gates do.

Gates were put in back in early December. They don't do anything. They can be blown up with small amounts of C4.

There is a player made structure at the top of a mountain on my research server that is...well, "tall" doesn't do it justice. If it were in the real world, it'd need lights to warn aircraft.
I think TPR has seen it too. I'll try to get a screenshot of it if I can find it again.

So in a world without C4... buildings are basically impregnable?

I think you could try using an excessive amount of grenades.

Not if they have a wood door.

And that one is about half the size of the ones I saw on the PVE servers.

I blame Cake next setting the door codes for my death and losing all my stuff.

Welp, not seeing the point.
Spent a couple hours last night running around, getting my bearings. Made a stone hatchet all by myself... yay! Found your little shack. Set up my sleeping bag in a spot. Logged out in the safety of the little shack.
Logged in tonight and I am somewhere brand new and everything is gone and all progress lost and YAY FUN. I guess someone must have killed me while I was afk and stole my sleeping bag.
It seems the best you can hope for in this game is that all of your progress is not wiped out every 24 hours.

Don't sleep in a little shack.
They destroyed your sleeping bag, they cannot steal it.
sleeping bags only belong behind metal doors or hidden in very good locations.
Personally, I like to sleep in tiny crags I find hidden in mountains.

Are you going to complain about every single game that gets suggested or finds a spot in our rotation? Is this because Cake shit all over AoE2?
I mean, you do realize that I could take your entire post and apply it to UO, right?
Give these games a chance. I know, I know, you are. Bullshit. You know how I know? Because I'm a stubborn SOB like you, and I know how I'd approach something new if I had a reason to resist.
Stop it. Come jump on my research server as I suggested. I'll show you the ropes, and show you more about where the game lies and is headed.
And again, this is an alpha build. So please understand I'm not disagreeing with most of your experience, just your attitude.
They've got a LOT of work to go.
Is it stupid that all of your progress can be wiped out with one C4 raid? Of course, but the rest of the game concept is there. This is the closest thing I've seen to early UO since early UO. The C4/Housing system is very, very flawed as is, and needs to be fixed.
In all honesty, this game NEVER should have been sold in it's current state. When I say that, I'm referring specifically to the housing situation.
You can't have a persistent world where there's a craftable item that can almost instantly eliminate the persistent world's man made structures. Especially when your combat system is borrowed shit.
Everyone is fighting over limited resources to build overly complex houses in hidden spots. People with more friends or time online win. End of story.
And the first wooden structure created by a new character should be invulnerable for 30 days.
The housing is just so fucked.
By the way, if the shack had a wooden door, it takes 200 hits from a hatchet to knock it down. Safety in Rust is an illusion unless you're on a non-PvP server or a server with no C4.

Someone answer me a few things:
1. What is our goal in the game?
2. Is it possible to make any progress toward that goal while this game is
a) In alpha
b) Full of people using exploits
c) Wiped frequently
++++++++++
In UO at least when you logged out, you were logged out. Anything in your backpack or bank logged off with you. Today I wake up and all progress is lost, I am in a place I have never seen before, backpack is empty of all the shit I collected the day before, and there is no explanation for any of it.
Seriously.... this is fun?

It's more about building personal skill right now. How to fight, how to build bases.
We have a few pistols on the new server now, why don't we go hunt some dudes and get some pvp in?

1. What is our goal in the game?
That's fuzzy, and not just from the design. I mean, what was our goal in UO? There was no "end game".
I'm simply enjoying the concept that's in place.
2. Is it possible to make any progress toward that goal while this game is
a) In alpha
Considering everything will most likely be wiped before gold, yes and no.
Yes is that we'll know the game.
No in that when gold hits we'll be starting at scratch with everyone else.
b) Full of people using exploits
UO was gold and we were playing it, yet people were using exploits. People used exploits in LoL. People suck.
c) Wiped frequently
Answered.

"No Sleeper" servers have that feature.
Today I wake up and all progress is lost,
It is pretty easy to get back on track. Doesn't stop the frustration, but it's true.
I am in a place I have never seen before,
/location and are you using the maps?
and there is no explanation for any of it.
That part sucks.
Seriously.... this is fun?
Was UO fun when our house got looted? When you were PKed while holding a ton of stuff? Was LoL fun when we'd lose an entire night of games and have in fighting? And I could go on with this.
The server with 100 people on was NOT even remotely fun. The server with the group who had all the C4 was fun. Then they raided us, and it was a lot of fun escaping, and planning our rebuild and revenge, then the hacker hit. I've found my research server that's had between 1-12 people on at a time fun. I honestly have more tension farming resources or raiding spawns with fewer people on than more. I think with a ton of people on a server I just expect to be PKed and it kills the thrill.
Anyway, point being, we need to find a server that has the features we want. My biggest thing would be little to no C4. The C4 is just too much of a game changer. (Although my research server has C4.)
Again, come join me on the research server for a bit one night. Let me give you a head start, then go check out the world and see what people are doing without dying every 5 minutes. It might help you see more of the potential of the game rather than focusing on the negatives.
