Just filter your server list as such:

Not empty
VAC secured (keeps some cheaters out)
Low ping.

-Sort the list by ping.
-Find one that is well populated, and, if you can tell from the description, NOT running Arena 24/7.
-I'd recommend Soldier as a class with which to learn the game. It really is a general, "middle ground" class.

If you find the game to be any fun at all, try to hook up with us after the kids go to bed. We should prolly make a thread dedicated to our Steam user ID's, since they are currently scattered here and there.

I'm taking the family to meet up with some other clown's family at the German-American festival tonight, but I should be home by 10 and will be playing most of the night after that.

Available all day and night Saturday. (updated)

I'll definitely be on at various times Sunday.

Thoughts:

"Fast Weapon Switching."
I didn't like how when I hit different weapons keys, it only "highlighted" the weapon,a nd I actually had to hit the fire key to select it. I found a keyboard setting for "fast weapon switching" that means when I hit a weapon key, it selects that weapon. Same with the mouse wheel... no more having to hit the fire key to actually select the weapon. I used this last night and I'm pretty sure I prefer this method.

"Automatically heal when equipped" or some such thing.
When this option is selected your medic, when equipped with his healing fire hose, automatically keeps healing whatever guy you targeted without having to hold down the fire key. Also used this last night, and I like it better.

Not a fan of Arena?

Not more than one map at a time.

Not sure if you noticed last night, but I joined you on the server you were playing. After the second Arena map in a row, I got tired of sitting out watching.

Oh, i did.

I commented on your funny burning, falling to your death experience with the ravine, thought you noticed.

Ooooh, I remember falling into the ravine, but I missed the commentary.

Because I didn't even know that ravine was there.

Where do I find that option?

Outside of Arena being a bit buggy, I'm not a huge fan of it yet. I love the concept, but I haven't seen ANY teamwork whatsoever of the dozen or so times I've played. On a normal map, teamwork flows from experience and the general goals. Even through death, people are working together and the rounds last long enough to get a sense of what the team needs. In arena, there is no chance for that sort of learning.

I read someone mention it in another discussion, and I was just going through the control settings (while being a forced spectator on an arena map...) and I found the setting SOMEWHERE in there. Same with fast weapon switching.

I got IN THE ZONE with the sniper at one point, last night. My previous max kills with a sniper was 16 (my max overall being 19, with the heavy). In one life with the sniper I was at 22 kills, and only quit because the game ended. It was a push-the-cart level, where the last stage turns the corner out of the tunnel, goes under a walkway, and then another 20 foot push wins the game. My sniper (on defense) was positioned in our backfield, and I personally stopped every rush for the last 5 minutes with one headshot after another. I couldn't believe how well I was doing. And like I said, the only reason I had to stop is because time ran out. Got up to 22 kills in that last life.

Not sure if I will ever be playing again on a server with that

',=,

clan.

The one guy, "CoVeRteR" or whatever, had twice my ping but was sniping me from around corners before I could ever see him. Tonight he literally accounted for about 95% of my deaths. I got exactly 2 kills on him. I'm not the best player ever, but I am not THAT bad.

Some people are just too "skilled." If they are ever back on FNF, I'll not be there until they leave.

I felt the same way about the one clan Saturday. Three of them were on and had the same logo. Two were going the heavy/medic combo most of the night, Toxy and Napalm.

They were dominating maps. The third one was not even remotely as effective.

What bugged me isn't that they were so good because, let's face it, there are bound to be lots of folks better than us and everyone who plays on the FNF server. My problem is that the heavy (Napalm) had double the points of the second best person on the server during any given map.

As for CoVeRter, not sure if you noticed or heard me, but I taunt killed him on one of the maps, so I'm pretty sure he didn't have a radar.

As a sniper, he was unbeatable. He always knew where I was no matter what the circumstances, and never failed to headshot me. The one time I got a kill on him it was because he'd "out-snipered" me at this one spot 5 times in a row, then he got distracted by a demo or something, and i was able to aim in on where his head always popped up. I sort of timed it, fired before I actually saw him, and just got lucky. Not sure if you noticed, but he was the top scorer on your team, as a sniper. Do you know how hard that is?

He probably thinks you're cheating. hehe

Well, I wasn't on his team all night. As for the sniper thing, I've seen snipers at the top of the leader board before. Not saying that to defend, just pointing it out.

However, before you think I'm discounting your claims, let me point out something. One of the snipers that is simply awesome is Sprat. This is not my opinion, but a known thing. On one map I was on the opposite team from Coverter and someone asked if we could get a sniper to counter him as he was tearing us apart. Xena suggested Sprat, but apparently, Sprat had already gotten beat up by him too. So again, either the guy is awesome or he's cheating.

The problem with pointing out cheaters is that you just don't know for certain. We can't 100% be sure that the person(s) in question has an aimbot or something like that. In their defense, I'm sure there are really, really good players out there. However, that being said, I'm not certain that it's a huge coincidence that these "good players" only show up on a server one night over a weekend and then never show up again.

I think that's the oddest thing. If you liked a server well enough to be there for hours, why not come back?

It also makes it hard for us to judge them. Everyone has great days and off days, so what are the odds that all these weekend one shot people just happen to be there on their "great" days?

so how do i see my overall death/kill ratio?

Posted: Mon Aug 25, 2008 9:47 am
by Leisher
I'm not sure that you can. I've looked through a lot of stats on Steam, and I've never seen death/kill totals.

Certain servers do track such things, however that's not info they're sharing with one another.

I was out of town all week. You should see me some this week though. Back out of town over next weekend. Then I'll be back for a while. So, you should see me again soon.

As far as beating me and my clan. . . well, you should, because at this point you have probably logged more hours than all of us combined. But when you don't. . . you should feel really stupid and worthless.

Yeah, I can only see death/kills per class.

In scout, my ratio was .7 (kill:death), which was my best. I was on a newb server, just 1v1... was was pretty fun. then a couple more people showed up... then suddenly the server was full, and it stopped being fun.

I've played approximately 40 minutes as a demo.

I have exactly 1 kill.
