Democrats aren't pro-government enough.

More poor people are now getting health care because it is subsidized. Most middle class people in history are now putting off getting health care because they are subsidizing poor people and can't afford it.

Working as intended?

Gordo, I think you give them too much credit. The intention was to give government more power. They aren't concerning themselves with trivial matters like results or how it works or deaths or anything of that nature.

Part of me wants to believe that Obama is behind this awesome collapse of Russia and oil prices, somehow collaborating with OPEC to ruin Russia.

If that's true, then I can finally give Obama some credit for something. And if it's not true, well, no shock.

I don't think they're smart enough to pull it off. Putin might've overplayed his hand.

My understanding is that the fracking has opened up a world of exporting petroleum that the US hasn't experienced in decades and was one of the things really helping us as far as trade balance. Not sure how this will play out for everyone involved, including the US.

That's the official story. But what-if that's the story only because Obama couldn't come out and say something that would jeopardize some # of American companies and jobs?

Right now, it's mostly a positive for the US, aside from fracking/energy companies.

Yeah, but I thought the fracking and energy companies are all that's giving us a net positive economy wise right now.

In a world of $100+ oil, they are helping, but not the sole contributor to economic growth. In a world of $55 oil, the rest of our economy will do much better. Estimates from the Fed are that the drop from $100 to $60 will contribute about 1.4 points to GDP, iirc. I read it the other day, but cannot find my source tonight.

Okay, that's good. I don't think this will last very long, but I want everything propped up long enough for me to get my house sold in a few months. :-)

Well, more good news for you then. With the government supporting 3% down payment loans, more buyers.

Yeah, I just saw something where some market guys are guessing at a 2.5-3% rise in housing values. Not that I'm worried about the up-tick so much as it's an indication that houses are selling better.

Obama handed car keys.

Michelle Obama once had to get something off a shelf. With vaguely racist undertones.

Michelle recalled that even when she visited a Target store as the first lady, a shopper seemed to assume she was an employee, asking her to reach an item on shelf. Her response: "This isn't anything new."

Old ladies ask me all the time to reach things on high shelves in supermarkets, because they are short and I am tall. It never occurred to me to be offended because of racism.

From Truth Revolt
Being asked to take things off shelves as a taller woman is the new Jim Crow.

But even Michelle Obama doesn’t think this. Two years ago, she told David Letterman about the same incident:

I thought I was undercover. I have to tell you something about this trip though. No one knew that was me because a woman actually walked up to me, right? I was in the detergent aisle, and she said — I kid you not — she said, ‘Excuse me, I just have to ask you something,’ and I thought, ‘Oh, cover’s blown.’ She said, ‘Can you reach on that shelf and hand me the detergent?’ I kid you not…And the only thing she said — I reached up, ’cause she was short, and I reached up, pulled it down — she said, ‘Well, you didn’t have to make it look so easy.’ That was my interaction. I felt so good. ... She had no idea who I was. I thought, as soon as she walked up — I was with my assistant, and I said, ‘This is it, it’s over. We’re going to have to leave.’ She just needed the detergent.

Charming and funny two years ago. Racism now.

Because she didn’t see me as the first lady, she saw me as someone who could help her.

... the implication here is that the first lady should never ... help anyone?

The point was seeing her as someone who wasn't the first lady, right? Not racism? I missed where she said that.

The Obama in a tux outside a restaurant being asked to get someone's car does have racist undertones, though. It's still about people seeing what they want, or are expecting to see, regardless of the actual situation. "Hey look it's a giant tall woman on aisle 5, I can get her to help me"

This thread is going to be excellent for historical purposes if the Russian economy collapses under Obama's watch. Doesn't even matter that fracking is the real killer, the real cause never gets the credit anyway. Further tinfoil - they know this and are getting out ahead of it by being nice to Cuba all of a sudden.

Also, I'm too young to feel the ill will towards Cuba that older generations and their representatives feel. I didn't have to hide under desks like my parents in Florida did.

I just want another place I can visit in the Caribbean. Sign me up for some tourism dollars and a mojito.

I actually remember the cold war, but I never cared about Cuba. US policy regarding them always seemed unduly harsh, to me.
