Gee, maybe he should've taken the makeup/wardrobe prep that Kennedy's advisers made him go through.GORDON wrote:It's because Nixon was battling the flu at the time, which was coming across on TV.Vince wrote:It's true that TV killed Nixon in the '60 campaign. Interestingly, the radio audience that listened to the infamous debate without seeing them gave it to Nixon over Kennedy. Which is a sad statement about the public in general.

At least I think it was the first televised debate. Maybe it wasn't.
But still.
Nixon v. Kennedy was the first televised debate. It's not like TV hadn't been around before. Certainly those in the film industry learned that it's a fucking stupid idea to go out in front of a camera without such things. People normally don't view you when you've got 100 spotlights on you.
From here.
Nixon insisted on campaigning until just a few hours before the first debate started. He had not completely recovered from his hospital stay and thus looked pale, sickly, underweight, and tired. He also refused makeup for the first debate, and as a result his beard stubble showed prominently on the era's black-and-white TV screens. Nixon's poor appearance on television in the first debate is reflected by the fact that his mother called him immediately following the debate to ask if he was sick. Kennedy, by contrast, rested and prepared extensively beforehand, appearing tanned, confident, and relaxed during the debate.

Joe arranged for JFK to practice in front of cameras at a local new station before the debates. He was pretty sharp when it came to public perception. To the point of being ruthless and deserving a bullet to the head. Might have been Karma what happened to his sons.

Merely confirming Nixon refused makeup services, which only worked to magnify his already underwhelming charm.GORDON wrote:I'm not sure what the argument is any more. Nixon deserved to lose because makeup?

We have a charming President now, isn't that going well.
But I am not arguing. Just saying I think history is going to be a lot softer on Nixon than it will be on Obama, or even Kennedy. His signature legislation only got passed after his death, out of pity. Obama and his party rammed a big dick down our throats and promised not to cum in our mouths and then did anyway. Nixon opened China.

I just googled it, and that Common Core shit - at least for math - is pretty damn awful. I appreciate that they are trying to teach concepts of meta-analysis, but the stuff I read was so badly done that there's absolutely no way the target audience could have possibly understood it and what they were trying to explain.
Yikes.

A few of us have posted examples and discussed it on facebook. In summary, I end up making sure my kid knows the correct way to do math as well as being able to do "math" the way the school wants to see it.
I remember when communities were responsible for teaching their own children, so that individual parents had a lot better chance of changing things if the curriculum got too retarded. Thank god for DC taking that away because now we have almost no power.

If you teach the kids math properly in grade school, then they'll be able to figure out that the huge scam which is college isn't financially worth it.

My kid is going to know all kinds of things that the establishment probably doesn't want him to know. I sometimes worry he'll grow up constantly miserable because he will see how idiotic is the society in which he lives. I at least got to be naive for about 30 years until I figured things out for myself.

They keep saying they aren't dictating the curriculum with these tests, but if you're testing about famous purple dinosaurs I'd wager a bet that Barney is going to have to be in the curriculum somewhere.

I've got a 1st grader, it's not as bad as all the incessant whining would have you suggest.
My primary issues are :
1) Targeting abstract reasoning towards individuals that are not yet capable of it (1st graders).
2) The reading level of some of the assignments must be 4th or 5th grade. My 1st grader reads and end-of-2nd grade level, but cannot read some of her homework on her own.

It's not me, it's someone else.
Yeah, I kinda battled that with myself on #2. On the one hand, it's poor targeting. Maybe that will get fixed. On the other hand, it forces parental involvement.
CC is new. There will always be the reactionary "Ack! something new!" and kinks that should be worked out later.

My sister is super involved with it here in TN. The stuff they're talking about here IS that bad.. They're trying to develop target schools so if your kid tests well in math and sciences, then they go to a high school that focuses on that. Much like the Soviets did. If you answer a math question wrong but can give a decent explanation of how you arrived at your wrong answer, you get more credit than a kid that got the answer right, but can't explain how they got it their answer.TheCatt wrote:I've got a 1st grader, it's not as bad as all the incessant whining would have you suggest.
It's a completely untried system developed by people that have never taught at the level they're developing for. I'm hoping a number of states opt out and we can compare where they are in a few years.
I'm all for trying something new, but I like the options of different states trying different things.

I don't mind, long as they don't go overboard.
