If you lose all your stuff and die, as long as you've increased your number of learned blueprints you are making progress. Server wipes erase that, of course, so joining a server shortly after a wipe where they don't plan on wiping again for a long time is ideal.

But as long as you keep learning blueprints, each time you have to start over you increase what you can do and how well and quickly you can do it.

It's an alpha game. There's HUGE imbalance. Exploits, etc. But, we are all playing by the same rules. Same handicaps. Same risk/rewards. Well, except for the hackers. That's why we play on heavily moderated server. Or at least try to.

I've started over a few times now. Troy even more. And it doesn't bother me. I look at each server I've been on as a new game of Rust. I don't see Rust as a long term persistent world right now. Not any more than I would a big game of Civilization. I've spent more time in Civ games than I have on some of these Rust servers. I wasn't pissed when I lost a 30 hour Civ game. I started a new one because it was fun to play.

I can't answer any of your questions because I don't know what you were looking for or expecting in the game.

My personal goal is to build a kick ass house. Get some sweet gear. Kill some people. Raid someone's house some day. Basically fight as a guild/crew/whatever every once in a while. I pretty much have the same goals as I did in UO. And I'm the complete newb at the game I was in the beginning of UO. No ability to be really competitive at PvP and just learning what gets me killed and where I shouldn't be.

Like Leisher said. When we got raided, it was 'fun'. Ya, it sucked getting our house broken into. But, the heart was racing. We were trying to come up with a plan to salvage what we could, etc. We have people walking around outside. They have already blown up one wall. They are working on another. It's only a matter of time before they get to our room. But we have multiple ways to exit the house. It's getting dark and harder to see. I could sense Leisher wanted to fight. We all have automatic weapons. But I had yet to win a PvP encounter like this and you KNOW these guys are hardened PvPers. And no offense, but TPR was our third! I knew we had no chance. The fighter in me wanted to fight. But the smarter person knew our best chance was to run. So, we loaded up with as much of the expensive stuff we could carry. A TON of resources which would be dumped into new houses. We started researching stuff to burn through research kits, etc. Then, in the pitch black with C4 timers ticking, we make our dash. I'm blind. I would change directions when I stopped moving (because I'm hitting something). I keep running down the mountain side. I dash out into the valley and head east to the forest. It's pitch black. Somehow, Leisher was in the same area I was. TPR, who was less familiar with the area never made it off the mountain. Leisher and I group up and head up into a nearby mountain to take cover till some light came up. We started making plans on what to do with what we were carrying and where we should go when BAM!! Hackers got us. They were speek hacking, flying and aim botting. I reported it immediately and admins were getting paged. Within 15 minutes, an admin was on trying to get the hackers banned. It's hard from what I hear because they know loop holes to be able to hide in the player database. They are ravaging the server. The raiders were attacked and lost everything they took from us. Just a matter of horrible horrible timing. That's when we called it a loss. To start from scratch vs other people with everything was too much. It would be like trying to beat a hard AI with only your commander after you got chased out of your base. Sure, you are still in the game, but you are going to have a VERY tough road. We said good game, and started a new game.

Over all, ya, that was fun. We gathered resources, spent them on the base and weapons. Got into some skirmishes. Had some decent shoot outs (would have been good shoot outs if my PC had been performing better). It's like UO on expert hard mode. Except, you don't have to train skills. You gather resources, gather equipment, learn how to craft better stuff, get stronger, go up against other people. Etc.

http://www.twitch.tv/directory/game/Rust

Don't know how many of you like to watch streams like I do, but here is the Twitch.tv link to people who are streaming Rust and down lower on the page some of the more popular videos from the week.

I was just watching one streamer who was teleporting himself and others around and changing game features on the fly, must have been an admin I'm guessing?

Navigation tool

It works! It's client-side, and as I understand it, it just sniffs incoming packets, so it should not be VAC detectable.

I was going to look into doing this too, but someone else has.

None taken. I'm no PvPer. I'm a crafter and builder, and a collector and explorer, but fighting in a FPS style is one thing I'm no good at. Can't aim worth a damn. Give me a reasonable chance at melee and I might do well, but still probably not. If you'd said fight I would have fought, but I'd have been bad at it.

TPR, who was less familiar with the area never made it off the mountain.

Actually, now I take offense. :p I may not be able to fight, but I can run and hide. I ended up going south, out of the mountains and across the valley below. Hid in the foothills of the next mountain chain over. It was after I decided they had gone for y'all instead of me and started moving again that one of them found me. If I'd been a little more patient I'd have been fine.

I would avoid using that if I were you.

You don't need it as it's a small map, and you'll learn it quickly. Plus, the VAC people aren't fucking around. They claim over 1,000 permabans already.

Can it sniff packets on the network from another computer? I'd be willing to run it from a laptop or something, but not on the same computer running the game.

Like he says, VAC don't play games.

I just played without it. Man it's easy to get used to using the map. Was completely disoriented.

The lag-died to a zombie. Argh.

Lots of people were complaining about lag today.

We could always play on a secondary non-PvP, carebear, Trammel server for those that want that. There are some servers that hand you a bunch of free stuff when starting too, so you don't have to work for anything.

Right now, I'm all about the non-C4 server. Other than that, I can live with pretty much anything.

Hmmm, I don't think so. But DAMN that tool was nice to use. It's a map and a bearing indicator.

I'm really good at keeping tracking of what direction I'm going IRL, but the sun isn't moving across the sky in < 60 minutes.

I've abandoned it for now. But I do want it back. Maybe I can my own. Apparently most of the VAC detection comes from submissions of tools found on forums, etc.

Day in the life for me:
Wake up early, find a bunch of resources, stockpile them at our home, cook some metal.

Go back later, resource for an hour, raid rad town a couple of times. Have to log off before getting back to base. Come back later, go back to rad town, lag death on a zombie. Go back down to find the suitcase, nothing.

Get back on later, go to rad town, get some decent stuff. Get killed before I can make it back. Revive and go back to the suitcase, get everything, start heading back to home. Get attacked by fast zombies and wolves (no weapons), and bleed to death before I get home. Revive again, find the suitcase, but the zombie is there. Get the suitcase, die at the foot of our mountain. Revive again, Grab a gun with laser sight and bullets. Go back down, get stuff out of suitcase, a bear is there, and the zombie. 12 bullets to kill both of them. (Bullets really that weak?) At least I remember to ®eload this time. Finally make it back home.

Just spent a "day" in the world.

Gathered. Built a bow. Built a camp fire. Cooked some food. Found some boxes with stuff in it. Heard someone walking up to the shack I was in and hauled ass the other direction. Found a glitch with building walls not rendering when I walked up to them... I could see them from far away, but as I got closer the walls disappeared segment by segment. Found a cliff overhanging the ocean, went down out of sight, and logged off, figuring I will have lost all progress when I log back in.

Trying to log back in after 20 minutes to see if I am dead yet, and I can't get on the server at all.

I guess the bottom line is what makes this game fun is the danger and tension from every action being high-stakes. It is hard, because it's supposed to be hard.

But it's not supposed to be impossible. It still needs some work along those lines. As the amount of content increases and the game gets deeper that'll help by giving established players something to do besides prey on each other. They'll still do that, too, of course, but right now it's the only game in town so it happens a lot.
