Honestly, I like when there are tasks to do. Unfortunately, people were cheating the system and ruined it.

I've always thought Valve should do something random for their loyal customers. Basically, if your account is X number of years old, in good standing (no cheating in games), and you own X number of games, you get entered into a daily drawing during the sale. 25 people win a game of their choice already on their wishlish. (They could really do this daily all year and it'd never dent any of their profits.)

They could add in other qualifiers, like reviews, account curation, owning Valve hardware, etc. Also, an account can only win once in a calendar year.

Those sorts of programs breed loyalty.

Didn't they do something like this once upon a time?

They've given away free games during a sale, but that was the one where they found people were gaming the system.

I don't remember any sort of loyalty program.

Just looked and you get three stickers by exploring your queue once.

Cards are earned through badges and purchases.

I've started a thing where I will purchase cards to complete a badge for any game I beat. So, I'll put together a few of those this sale and earn some badges.

"We need no stinking badges."

Collect all the cards of a set and then you can craft a badge.

Wow. The card market is locked unless you've made a purchase in the past year. I'm locked out for a week after my purchase yesterday.

Sounds like they had some fraud to deal with?

I'll have to check to see if I'm locked out.

A couple of Steam/gaming vids. I'll do a TLDW for you on each. Although, they're all interesting watches. The first two for court cases that I think might really appeal to Troy.

Some twats in the UK are suing Valve, on behalf of 14M gamers, for overcharging. Their case has been allowed to move forward by the UK courts. This guy breaks down why it's ridiculous, and how these women are clearly NOT gamers. Tim Sweeney supports this lawsuit because he's human garbage. The whole thing hinges on Valve's 30% distribution fee that the lawsuit claims is the highest in the industry and unique. The only problem is that it isn't. They claim that causes their games to be higher priced. Again, the problem there is that isn't true and they clearly have never heard of a Steam sale.

Anyway, this is a great breakdown.

This one might be the most interesting for Troy. A scumbag that buys patents and then sues companies to get them to settle went after Valve. It initially worked and they did what all companies do and just settled. However, he and his lawyers make a big mistake and sued Valve again for patents they had an agreement with Valve for already. They pulled their lawsuit when they realized their mistake, but Valve isn't letting them off the hook. They're going after the main guy (I forget his name, but you'll know it) and his lawyers. The lawyers apparently face possibly being disbarred for fucking this up so badly, and there's talk this could be a huge win for corporations against these types of cases.

A video about how Valve is fighting censorship from, in this case, woke devs who want the customer reviews removed from Steam. They'd like to be able to moderate them, IE: Remove the ones they don't want. That would obviously make them utterly useless. Again, Valve is holding the line for consumers. The devs are cherry picking "offensive" reviews to try and game the system, but Valve isn't budging. Some of them even seem like legit complaints, but it's also pretty obvious why Valve has drawn a line in the sand.

Once again, fuck Tim Sweeney.

The crux of the three Karens' lawsuit against Valve is that their 30% take causes high prices (seriously, these stupid cunts can't do any research about Steam sales?).

Here's an actual slide from a presentation in the Epic vs Apple case showing distributor takes:

I don't trust pirated games any more, honestly. Too easy to put in viruses and shit. 80s and 90s were peak hacked games.

I agree. Plus, I'm all growed up and can afford shit.

This whole Valve vs the rest of the gaming industry is such a great example of everything wrong with the corporate world.

A single company is making a product that consumers cannot live without. That company is making billions. Are they maximizing profit? No. However, the overwhelming majority of the customers in the market refuse to choose another product because Valve's is so good and constantly improving. Those improvements are all focused on one thing: Making the product better for consumers, empowering them, and giving them even more bang for their buck. They are constantly at the front line of fighting against shitty things on behalf of the customers like microtransactions, NFTs, etc. Oh, and Valve doesn't have layers of middle management stifling innovation or driving up their costs.

All the other companies are trying to maximize profit at the expense of their customers. Their products are only as good as they think is acceptable where customers will buy/use them. They are designed with selling and developers in mind. The customers' experience is secondary. In fact, they intentionally ensure the customers are not empowered. Instead of making better products to win consumers, they sue and use shady tactics to try and hurt their competition.

The entire corporate world should take notes. Valve is building an empire. They're all building sinking ships.
