Proof that DEI used wrong actually hurts the message and that a lot of executives are fucking morons.
First, you had Ubisoft finally set an Assassin's Creed game in Japan, which gamers had been begging them to do, and instead of a Japanese man being the main character, a samurai, Ubisoft went another way. They made the main character a black man based on horseshit about a black samurai that has been proven to be historically inaccurate. Then they made other playable characters including a non-binary woman because that was a thing back in feudal Japan.
(Not even mentioning all the other things in that game that pissed off the Japanese, including their government.)
Because that game caused a ton of backlash and didn't sell they've now apparently cancelled the next planned game thinking it's "too controversial in this political climate" (paraphrasing). Turns out, the next game would have seen the main character as a freed slave during the Civil War in the US fighting the KKK. BTW, it's important to note that every gaming streamer I've seen talk about this (no matter their race) have been as positive about that potential idea as they were negative on the Japanese AC game.
They pushed DEI where it didn't belong, pissed off their fanbase, and now are cancelling a game where it absolutely would have fit. The next fucking game in the series. Brilliant.
