Schools get more money when they perform better, and more people want to move to that school system, and pay more property tax. They've got to fix the problem at home, first.

Beyond our four walls, the school’s atmosphere was in total chaos. We couldn’t send students to the bathroom alone, as there had been instances of both girls and boys being raped there by other students. One of my kids found a knife on the ground on our way to lunch. An off-duty police officer and a drill sargeant were hired to help control the students in the cafeteria: one of them would bend over and scream in the children’s faces while the other marched up and down the center aisle, yelling into a microphone as the kids threw food around his head.

Not exactly a fun working and learning environment.

Things were quite a bit calmer in my classroom, but student behaviors still posed a huge problem. Getting students to respond appropriately to even the smallest request took Herculean, first-day-of-school efforts from me. It was like the movie Groundhog Day. We practiced the same basic routines and procedures over and over, and three quarters of the class just wasn’t internalizing anything.

Yeah, my kids know none of this. Their schools are about half Asian (primarily Indian) and half white. Very small percentage of any other minority. Schools are county-wide, but they stopped busing, so pretty much everyone is from our good part of the county. Most everyone has two parents, most of whom earn above average. Many still have 1 parent at home. The kids all basically pay attention and listen to their teachers, etc. The occasional prank is "Chromecasting a video to the teaching screen when there's a sub" or something. There's never been a fight at my oldest daughter's middle school. My middle school? I don't think we went a week without at least one fight.

About 18% of kids in our county "opt out" into private schools or homeschooling. If we were richer, we probably would, too. Thib's kids, iirc, are in the "School within a school" system. They bus all those kids into the city. Crazy long bus rides.

The results were reported in Primary Sources: America’s Teachers on the Teaching Profession. The report, recently released by Scholastic and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, shows that the increased level of behavior problems has been seen across grade levels: 68 percent of elementary teachers, 64 percent of middle school teachers, and 53 percent of high school teachers say the same.

Yeah, they say schools need more funding to fix the problems, so they can blame the voters when schools fail.

There's certainly a resource issue. Private schools where I live are $25k/yr (no transportation). Public schools get $9.5k/yr (all-in, busing, etc) per pupil in NC. In theory some of that money could be used to help problem children (social workers, counselors, etc)... but yeah. You have to care, too.

I remember watching movies 20+ years ago that portrayed inner city parents as lawsuit-happy, if anyone tried to discipline their shitty students. It was obvious then that we were headed for a big problem.

The "whoop your ass" generation turned out pretty well. The "timeout" generations are turning into dumpster fires.

Also, as far as the other stuff you've been discussing...there are a lot of black people who will tell you that there are major problems in the black community far more pressing than police brutality.

Every unarmed black person shot by police in 2019...the stories.

From the Daily Wire, so I'm sure that'll immediately disqualify it, as "only left wing outlets tell the truth" or some shit. However, they're all part of the public record, and they bring up an interesting case that BLM and all the protests are a gross overreaction.

In related news, A&E got woke, and is now going broke. A 50% prime time ratings drop is HUGE.

Amazon was selling shows described as "n*gg*r brown".

"Given the item has been on sale since March what systems do you have in place for reviewing descriptions and not allowing offensive terms to be posted in the first place? This is not the first time."

This does seem like an easy automated fix for clearly offensive words. However, once a term has two meanings it gets far more complicated. For example: Does Amazon sell crackers? How about anything monkey themed? And so on. Seems like they need mods or a review process for listings?
