I played a bit this afternoon while waiting for a video to render. They've still got some work to do. It doesn't have the same feel yet at all.

Got a few hours in last night. Still very raw. New building system is deeper - but requires a lot of hammering to build.

Doors kind of suck now. You need 10 metal fragments to make a key. Which isn't bound to you in anyway.

The maps are totally random. Biomes are very cool. I built a 3x3 base on an island next to a lake and two different biomes(snow and forest). Giant forests means there is now practically unlimited wood. Seemed almost imbalanced - because trees are the new wood piles.

Anyway, I made my 3x3 base house, and then someone came to visit, so we stabbed each other with our spears and both bled to death.

He came back with a buddy after and killed me before I could get my door lock build. So that was lame.

Gameplay wise, things are very un-polished. They seem to have figured out the draw-distance and rendering objects from far away, very cool inclusions. I had to turn my graphics WAY down for it to be playable though.

I can't play it on either of my work PCs. It's like watching a slideshow.

Honestly, after playing it Friday afternoon, I don't know why they went live with the new version. It's nowhere near close to being playable. And light years away from having the same draw as the legacy version.

Also, I think the random maps suck.

With the static map, you had areas to fight over. You had a decision to make over your house location (high traffic/close to resources vs. low traffic/far from resources). There was a "lore" built into the buildings left behind, like "What the hell was this place"?

Now you're just staking out a claim on a random section of a random map. Folks might find you and they might not. There's nothing to fight over. No central map location to go get better gear.

The game is currently, imho, a short featured Minecraft.

I really like the random maps - though I think they will need to be smaller to foster more interactions. This game is going to be excellent when it's cooked a little longer.

If you jump in the water near the snow terrain, you will slowly freeze to death and lose health. Suuucks.

Also saw this on key security:

What I like to do is make lanterns and hide them in hard to reach crevices a good hike from my place. The lanterns have a single inventory slot, so I just stuff a backup key into it. If someone happens to find one, it isn't close enough to the house to be obvious. I also like to hide several lanterns within the same vicinity and fill them with fake keys.

Random maps will make more sense as the game becomes more persistent. With monthly wipes, random maps are too, uh, random.

Posting that stuff about Early Access today got me to thinking about Rust.

I am amazed at how much work the Rust developers have put into it and how far they've come, yet still have a game that's FAR less popular and fun than the prototype they released back in the beginning.

I loaded it up the other day. Looks like it's mostly right back to where it was before but in the new engine. Except I sprinted around randomly for 30 minutes and never once saw anything dangerous besides other players. And in all that time I also only saw one deer and one pig.

Animals are really fast now. You have to actually hunt them. Loot cans are in.

Also, it's really easy to meet up with your friends now, more than ever. Even on a completely unknown map.

Everyone starts, tries to get cloth. First person to 50 Cloth builds a sleeping bag, and then you assign it to your buddy, they suicide, and repeat until the whole party is together.

Troy, you said it's getting close. How close?

I was on a few weeks ago, and they still had a LONG way to go. The game world was really small and server populations are in the cellar.

Looks like I need to check out playrust.com to catch up and fire the game up this week for a quick run around.

It seemed to have jumped in quality in a month, though perhaps I hadn't played it for longer than that since last weekend. It was much smoother than I remember, sound FX was better, there were roads, loot, animals, etc.

I got a small house built near a rock. Got a sleeping bag made. Then went on an epic gathering run that ended abruptly when I turned around and there was a giant motherfucking bear behind me. Who chased me down and killed me.

e: also on the initial run to get resources for my sleeping bag some ass-hat skipped past door and stone wall and pick axed my basic wood wall instead. The basic wood walls only have 25 durability. If you really want to stop someone you have to upgrade to stone or better. He just got some wood and a hammer though.

I know they have some plans to make houses harder to raid. At least, harder to raid the entirety of it. So peeps could get into a room, but not all rooms.

He still logs into Steam. Can try to catch him there.

Truthfully, we don't know. Nothing has ever been said.

His kid was still posting here well after Cake disappeared and never mentioned anything, and I've talked to Cake recently (not about gaming or this site) and things were fine.

I hope that at some point he does return because I really want to finish Payday and move into Payday 2.

I think Rust will be awesome when it's done in 2020.

Still the same old rust. Last night I wandered for forever before finding some rocks on a newly wiped server. The new ambient noise is cool, good sound effects and atmospheric add-ins.

I gathered some wood and threw a house down. Got the basic wooden beams up and the roof on when 4 guys smashed into my front door. I heard them coming and was on them in flash with a looted ice pick. Nobody had any guns and I managed to take 2 to hell with me.
